Julius Honka (born December 3, 1995 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with JYP Jyväskylä from the Finnish Liiga since October 2019 . In North America, the Finn, who played for the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League until July 2019 , has the status of a restricted free agent .

Career

Honka learned to play ice hockey at Diskos Jyväskylä in his hometown, before he later switched to city rivals JYP Jyväskylä . The defender played there until the end of the 2012/13 season. After his first year in the A-Juniors, he decided to leave his home club and moved to North America, where he joined the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League in the 2013/14 season. They had chosen him in the CHL Import Draft . Honka completed a total of 68 matches for the Broncos. His 58 scorer points underpinned his appointment to the West Second All-Star Team of the league and the selection of 14th overall position in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars from the National Hockey League .

For the 2014/15 season , the 18-year-old received an NHL entry contract and was used by Dallas in the following two game years exclusively in the American Hockey League . There he played for the Texas Stars farm team . After the Finn started the 2016/17 season there, he was appointed to the Dallas Stars NHL squad for the first time at the end of November 2016 and made his debut there.

After his contract expired in summer 2019 and he was unable to agree on a new contract with the stars until the start of the 2019/20 season, he has since had the status of a restricted free agent . Since his contract situation with the stars remained unclear until October, he finally signed a contract with his home club JYP Jyväskylä. This has a release clause for the NHL until the end of November 2019.

International

For his home country, Honka took part in the junior division of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2012 , the U18 World Junior Championship in 2013 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2014 and 2015 . In addition to a bronze medal at the U18 Junior World Championship, to which he contributed four scorer points in seven games, he was able to achieve the age group world title at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2014. The defender also played all seven tournament encounters there and prepared a goal. The following year he reached seventh place with the defending champion.

At the 2017 World Cup , Honka made her debut for the senior national team of Finland , finishing fourth with the team, before finishing fifth the following year .
