Rinat Ischakowitsch Valiev ( Russian Ринат Исхакович Валиев ; English transcription: Rinat Ishakovich Valiev ; born May 11, 1995 in Nizhnekamsk ) is a Russian ice hockey player who has been with the Calgary Flames from the National Hockey League (NHL) since October 2018 and has a parallel contract for their farm team , the Stockton Heat , plays in the American Hockey League (AHL) on the position of defender .

Career

Rinat Valiyev spent his youth in the offspring of Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League (KHL), where he played for their junior teams Irbis Kazan and Bars Kazan in the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga (MHL) from his hometown Kazan . His first North American team were the Indiana Ice from the United States Hockey League (USHL). In the 2013/14 season , the defender played for the first time in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Kootenay Ice , to which he remained loyal for two seasons.

In the NHL Entry Draft 2014 Valiyev was selected in the third round in 68th position by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League (NHL) and received an entry level contract with a term of three years in July 2014 . He then played for the Maple Leafs farm team , the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League (AHL), and played ten regular season games in the NHL for the Maple Leafs in the 2015/16 season.

In February 2018, shortly before the end of the trade deadline , it was handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal together with Kerby Rychel and a second-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft , the Maple Leafs received Tomáš Plekanec and Kyle Baun in return . At the beginning of March 2018, Valiev played his first game for the Canadiens in the 4-6 defeat at the New Jersey Devils . Before the start of the 2018/19 season, however, he and Matt Taormina were transferred to the Calgary Flames in October 2018 , while Brett Kulak moved to Montréal.

International

Valiev won the silver medal with the U20 national team of Russia at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2015 .
