Matthew Angelo "Matt" Taormina (born October 20, 1986 in Washington Township , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League until July 2019 and for their farm team , the Stockton Heat , in the American Hockey League on the position of the defender played.

Career

Matt Taormina began his career as a hockey player with the Texarkana Bandits , for which he was active in the North American Hockey League in the 2004/05 season . There he was able to convince with 17 goals and 33 assists in 61 games and was elected to the all-rookie team of the NAHL as well as to the rookie of the year . From 2005 to 2009 he attended Providence College and played parallel for its ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association before making his professional ice hockey debut for the Binghamton Senators towards the end of the 2008/09 season .

For the 2009/10 season Taormina signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils , which was valid exclusively for the AHL and played throughout the season for New Jersey's AHL farm team Lowell Devils . After good performance in preparation, the American began the 2010/11 season with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League . In July 2012, he signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent .

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Taormina could not prevail in the NHL squad and was given to the AHL farm team Syracuse Crunch in September . During the season he moved to the Springfield Falcons , where he ended the 2013-14 season before joining the Worcester Sharks for the 2014-15 season. In July 2015 he returned to the Syracuse Crunch and the Tampa Bay Lightning. In the crunch jersey, Taormina was honored with the Eddie Shore Award as the best defender of the AHL after the 2016/17 season and was also appointed to the league's first all-star team .

Still, the Lightning did not extend the defender's contract after the end of the season, so he joined the Canadiens de Montréal in July 2017 . Taormina, without him having played for the Canadiens in the NHL, gave them to the Calgary Flames in October 2018, along with Rinat Valiyev , while Brett Kulak moved to Montréal. The defender was used throughout the 2018/19 season for Calgary's AHL cooperation partner, Stockton Heat , before his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2019.
