Jordan Schmaltz (born October 8, 1993 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League since February 2020 and for their farm team , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of defender . His younger brother Nick is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Schmaltz spent his junior years with the Chicago Mission until 2010. The defender was then active in the United States Hockey League , where he played one year each for the Sioux City Musketeers and Green Bay Gamblers between 2010 and 2012. With the Gamblers, he won the Clark Cup at the end of the 2011/12 season . After being selected in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 25th place by the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League , Schmaltz first moved to the University of North Dakota . There, the American played the following three years in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and National Collegiate Hockey Conference - both divisions in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

After three years at college , Schmaltz was signed to the St. Louis Blues in late May 2015. There he came in the following two playing years mainly in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves farm team . During the 2016/17 season , the defender made his NHL debut for the Blues and appeared there a total of nine times.

After a total of four years in the organization of the Blues, the American was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2019 , while Andreas Borgman moved to St. Louis in return . In Toronto he was only used with the Marlies in the AHL before he was transferred to the New York Islanders in exchange for Matt Lorito at the trade deadline in February 2020 .

International

For his home country Schmaltz played in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 and the World Junior A Challenges 2010 and 2011 . He won the gold medal at both tournaments in the 2010 calendar year. A bronze medal was added the following year.
