Sami Aittokallio (born August 6, 1992 in Tampere ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been playing for Vaasan Sport in the Finnish Liiga since 2018 .

Career

Sami Aittokallio began his career with Tampereen Ilves in the city of his birth. There he went through all youth classes and made his debut in the 2009/10 season in the SM-liiga , the top division of Finland. He was then selected at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in the fourth round at a total of 107th position by Colorado Avalanche . In the same year it moved the HC CSKA Moscow in the KHL Junior Draft in the seventh round as the 176th overall player. However, he remained in Tampere for the next two years, where he was in the can in addition to his assignments with Ilves in the Liiga on loan with Lempäälän Kisa in the second-rate Mestis .

In 2012 Aittokallio then moved across the pond to his draft club, which mainly used him for the Lake Erie Monsters farm team in the American Hockey League . On April 11, 2013 he made his NHL debut against the Los Angeles Kings , in which he was injured. He had to wait until January 25, 2014 for his second assignment, when he was used in the game at Tampa Bay Lightning . Since he could not assert himself in Colorado and was even downgraded to the ECHL club Fort Wayne Komets at times , he switched to the Finnish Liiga club Oulun Kärpät on loan in the summer of 2015 , for which he was on the ice until 2017. After a year at HC Sparta Prague in the Czech Extraliga , he has been back in the Finnish Liiga since 2018 for Vaasan Sport .

International

Aittokallio played internationally for the first time in 2009 at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge and at the European Olympic Winter Youth Festival for Finland. At the U18 World Cup in 2010 , he was in the squad of the Finnish selection, with which he won the bronze medal, but he himself was not used. In 2011 and 2012 he took part in the World Championships in this age group with the Finnish U20 team and achieved the third-best catch quota of the tournament behind the Russian Andrei Wassilewski and the Canadian Mark Visentin .
