Karkkila [ ˈkɑrkːilɑ ] ( Swedish Högfors ) is a town in southern Finland with 8,778 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Uusimaa region around 60 km northwest of the capital Helsinki . Karkkila is monolingual in Finnish .

Karkkila lies on the centuries-old trade route between Häme and the coast. This created the settlement on the shores of Lake Pahajärvi. When a parish was founded in 1654, it was given the more Christian name Pyhäjärvi ("holy lake") instead of Pahajärvi ("bad lake"). In 1869 Pyhäjärvi became an independent municipality with the name Pyhäjärvi Ul . The name extension Ul stood for Uudenmaan lääni (province of Uusimaa) and served to distinguish it from Pyhäjärvi Ol in the then province of Oulu . The current center of Karkkila was separated from Pyhäjärvi in 1932 and became the market town of Karkkila. In 1969 Pyhäjärvi Ul and Karkkila reunited under the name Karkkila, and in 1977 the municipality became a town.

The main attraction for visitors to the city are the rapids of the Karisån River , which connects the town with the sea.

Iron ore has been mined near Karkkila since the beginning of the 19th century . The town's industrial tradition began in 1822 with the construction of the Högfors ironworks . Since then, Karkkila has developed into an industrial city. In its prime, the ironworks alone employed half of the working population. To date, the proportion of employees in the industrial sector is high at 45.6% (2003). The labor movement in Karkkila has always been correspondingly strong . Today the post-communist left alliance has the largest parliamentary group in the city council. Besides Kemi in Lapland , Karkkila is the only city in which the left alliance is the strongest party.

From 1997 Karkkila was a member of the European city association Douzelage , but later resigned.
