Mäntsälä [ ˈmæntsælæ ] is a municipality in southern Finland with 20,686 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the Uusimaa region around 60 km northeast of the capital Helsinki . Mäntsälä is monolingual in Finnish .

Just over half the population lives in the center of Mäntsälä. The municipality also includes the villages of Arola, Hautjärvi, Herman Onkimaa, Hirvihaara, Kaukalampi, Levanto, Maitoinen, Mäntsälä Nikinoja, Numminen, Ohkola, Olkinen, Saari, Sulkava, Sälinkää and Sääksjärvi.
The Mäntsälänjoki river, which flows through the town, was an important trade route between Häme and the coast in the Middle Ages . Mäntsälä was founded in 1585, when the first church was built. Today's brick church stands in the same place and dates from 1866. Mäntsälä is known for the Mäntsälä uprising, a failed coup attempt by the fascist Lapua movement in 1932. On February 27, 1932, protective corps belonging to the Lapua movement dissolved one with armed force Event of the Social Democrats . Over the next few days several hundred insurgents gathered in Mäntsälä under the leadership of the former Lieutenant General Kurt Martti Wallenius and demanded the resignation of the cabinet. The uprising threatened to spread to other parts of the country, but when President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud promised in a radio address that only the leaders of the rebellion would be punished, the insurgents dispersed. The leaders were arrested a few days later, and the Lapua movement disbanded that same spring.
