The Le Suroît is a research ship belonging to the French research institute Ifremer . It is managed by Genavir.
history
The ship was built in the mid-1970s under construction number 1243 at the French shipyard Ateliers et Chantiers de La Manche in Dieppe and was completed in early 1975.
The ship was involved in the 1985 expedition to search for the wreck of the Titanic . In 1999 it was rebuilt and modernized.
Technical specifications
The ship is powered by two twelve - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines, each with an output of around 600 kW . The motors act on a controllable pitch propeller . The ship reaches a speed of 14 knots . It has an active rudder with 110 kW power and a bow thruster with 150 kW power.
Two generators with a power of 500 kW each ( apparent power : 625 kVA ), which are driven by the main engines, are available for the power supply. In addition, a diesel generator with an output of 144 kW (apparent output: 180 kVA) was installed.
The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice.
Furnishing
The ship is equipped with various systems required for the research work, including echo sounders , sonar , thermosalinograph and bathythermograph . Several rooms are available for research, including a wet and a dry laboratory. There are spaces on board for four 20-foot containers .
The ship has several cranes, including a crane on the port side and a crane system on the starboard side on the aft deck. There is a stern boom at the stern of the ship . There are also various winches on deck .
In addition to the crew, there is space on board for 14 scientists and other personnel required for research trips.
