Johann Wilhelm Naumann
Johann Wilhelm Naumann (born July 9, 1897 in Cologne , † May 1, 1956 in Würzburg ) was a German journalist and publisher . He was the founding editor of the national, Catholic newspaper Deutsche Tagespost .
Life
Naumann was born in Cologne in 1897 as the son of a master carpenter and his wife. After graduating from high school, he first studied philosophy, history, economics and literature in his hometown. In the First World War he took part as a pilot .
In the Weimar Republic he was a member of the Bavarian People's Party (BVP). In 1920 he joined the editorial team of the BVP-related newspaper Der Rheinpfälzer in Landau in the Palatinate. After a stopover as a publishing clerk, he was editor of the Catholic-oriented regional newspaper Neue Augsburger Zeitung (NAZ) from 1928 . In 1932 he was the German representative at the International Congress of the Catholic Academic Press in Lille, France.
In the 1930s he took a position against National Socialism in lectures . In 1933 he was banned from working and changed to the publishing house of the catholic Augsburger Postzeitung as an employee . From 1935 he was unemployed . He found a new job in 1937 as a secretary at the Pontifical Mission Societies in Aachen. At the end of the war he lived in Freiburg im Breisgau . After he found shelter with a friend during Operation Tigerfish , American officers found him in Boll in the Black Forest in the summer of 1945 .
After the Second World War he helped to rebuild the German press: in 1945 he and the Social Democrat Curt Frenzel received the license for the Schwäbische Landeszeitung published in Augsburg in the American occupation zone . From 1946 he was a license holder of the Catholic monthly magazine Neues Abendland . Journal for politics, culture and history , as its publisher and temporary editor-in-chief from 1946 until 1951 when it was sold to the financier Erich von Waldburg-Zeil . This laid a foundation for the Western Movement .
When he left the Schwäbische Landeszeitung in 1948, he became the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Augsburger Tagespost , with the federal edition operating under the name Deutsche Tagespost . In the summer of 1949 he went on a three-month study trip to the USA , where he turned to the subjects of " religious journalism " and "popular magazine literature". In 1950 the Augsburger Tagespost was renamed the Neue Augsburger Zeitung , which was to be revived. After the paper was discontinued in 1951, the national Deutsche Tagespost first appeared in Regensburg and from 1955 in Würzburg.
In 1945 he was a co-founder of the "Association of Bavarian Newspaper Publishers", which he headed as 1st chairman until 1950. From 1946 to 1949 he was also chairman of the "Working Group of Newspaper Publishers Associations in the US Zone". In 1947 he was one of the founders of the "Association of German Federalists".
Naumann, a Catholic, was married twice and had several children.
