Theodor Herr (born October 31, 1929 in Menden ; † June 14, 2007 in Allersberg ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and social ethicist .

Live and act

Mr. came from the Sauerland . From 1949 to 1954 he studied philosophy and theology in Paderborn , Munich and Innsbruck . In 1954 he was in Paderborn Cathedral by Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger for ordained priests . Then he worked in pastoral care .

From 1961 he studied social sciences in Münster . In 1970 he was at Wilhelm Weber Theological Catholic at the Faculty with the thesis On the question of natural law in German Protestantism the presence of Dr. theol. PhD. In 1973 he received a teaching position for Christian social teaching at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn . In 1974 he qualified as a professor at Faculty 2 (Catholic Theology) of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster on the subject of natural law from the critical point of view of the New Testament . From 1975 to 1995 he was Associate Professor for Christian Social Studies at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn. His main topics included a. Questions of natural law , Catholic social teaching and church labor law . Herr's Introduction to Catholic Social Doctrine, published in 1987, is considered a standard work and was very quickly translated into several languages. Study trips took him to the Orient, the Philippines and Latin America . In 1995 he was visiting professor in Peru and in 1996 in Nicaragua . Since the 1980s he has dealt with liberation theology and its controversial relationship to Catholic social teaching, which he defended against allegations by liberation theologians. As a result of this dispute, at the end of the 1980s he presented his “Theology of Reconciliation” ( Teología de la reconciliación ), which he expressly wanted to be understood as a more contemporary alternative to liberation theology. The translation of his book Reconciliation Instead of Conflict (1991) into Spanish ( Reconciliación en lugar de conflicto , Lima 1994) was coordinated by the Peruvian sodalitium , which at the time acted as a spearhead in the fight against liberation theology.

Mr. was a member of the Joint Commission "University" at the Catholic Office of North Rhine-Westphalia, commissioner for university issues within the main school and education department in the Archbishop's General Vicariate, member of the Board of Trustees of the Social Institute of the Archdiocese of Paderborn in Dortmund and the Christian Social Science working group there, and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ruhr Institute for sociopolitical research Education and advisor to Commission I “Politics, Constitution, Law” in the Central Committee of German Catholics . In 1982 he became a diocesan judge at the Archbishop's Office in Paderborn. From 1984 to 1988 he was the representative of the German Bishops' Conference in the speaker group of the working group of Catholic student and university communities . He was also chairman of the Friends of St. James Pilgrims (see St. James' Way ).

Mr. was friends with the doctor and publisher Heinrich Wilhelm Naumann (1932-2001), the son and since 1973 successor of Johann Wilhelm Naumann as editor of the national Catholic newspaper Deutsche Tagespost . In 1988 he became co-editor of the newspaper based in Würzburg . In addition, until 1992 he was managing director of the Johann Wilhelm Naumann Verlag, which publishes the daily mail .

Theodor Herr died on June 14, 2007 as a result of a traffic accident .
