Religion journalism

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Religious journalism deals with religious topics, people and events.

Religious journalism is not a clearly delimited department . Rather, the area of religious journalism spills over into other departments. Religious journalism plays a role especially in the reporting of the Politics, Local and Regional departments. Religious journalism is also closely linked to social reporting . Church journalism, like all print media, has suffered significant decreases in circulation in recent years.

Demarcation

In religious journalism, a distinction must be made between media that are close to, or supported by, churches or religious and religious communities, and non-church media. Secular media departments, on the other hand, are showing increasing interest in religious topics. This can lead to the takeover of Christian-oriented print media by independent media groups. One example is the evangelical-conservative weekly newspaper Christ und Welt , which has been distributed as a supplement to the weekly newspaper Die Zeit since 2010 , after Christ and Welt merged in 1980 with the Rheinischer Merkur , which was supported by German Catholic bishops .

Content

In religious journalism , unlike in news journalism , the most important selection criterion for reporting is not timeliness. The selection of sustainable topics is more important. Sustainable topics could be, for example, the discussion about the abolition of religious education or compulsory ethics classes in schools, about Islamic religious education in state schools or the headscarf dispute .

Religious journalism often relies on journalistic forms of representation such as portraits or reports .

Occupational field and career entry

One way into religious journalism is to study Catholic or Protestant theology , religious studies , Islamic studies or Jewish studies . In addition, the joint venture of Protestant journalism and the Institute for the Promotion of Young Journalists offer advanced training for journalists who have experience in religious reporting.

The Christian Journalism department at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg offers the nationwide unique master’s course "Media-Ethics-Religion".

Awards

The Catholic Church awards the Catholic Media Prize in the categories of print and electronic media . The Robert Geisendörfer Prize of the Evangelical Church in Germany is mainly awarded for the performance of social reporting.
