The Tegelberg is a striking mountain range rising steeply from the foothills of the Alps near Schwangau in the Ammergau Alps in the southern Ostallgäu district in Bavaria . The highest point with a height of 1881 m above sea level. NHN is the Branderschrofen .
location
The Tegelberg massif begins in the west on the Pöllat , which flows under the Marienbrücke and then near Neuschwanstein Castle . Its ridge rises steeply from there to the east up to 1,455 m; there are some pinnacles and pinnacles in this area. A little further to the east, the ridge at the Tegelbergkopf rises to 1,587 m. About a kilometer further east are the Tegelberghaus and the mountain station of the Tegelbergbahn on the ridge .
To the north of the ridge described is the striking pinnacle of the 1645 m high gate head and the yellow wall cave . In between is the central pillar of the mountain railway. The elevation east of the valley station is called Hornburg , is 1172 m high and almost completely forested.
Attractions
The Tegelberg is accessible via the mountain railway of the same name . The mountain is a popular destination for mountain hikers, hang-gliders , paragliders and skiers. There is a panorama restaurant next to the mountain station at 1720 m . Not far away is the Tegelberghaus. This economy used to be the royal Bavarian hunting lodge of Maximilian II . A 760 m long summer toboggan run is located directly at the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn . Also near the station, according to initial indications in 1934, extensive remains of Roman settlements were discovered during search excavations in the following year . The foundations of a well-preserved bathing building were excavated next to the valley station in 1967/68 and then made accessible to the public ( Roman villa ). The castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are also located at the foot of the Tegelberg. From the mountain station you can see Säuling , Hoher Straussberg , Bannwaldsee , Forggensee and Hopfensee , among others .
Ascent to the Tegelberg
Even without using the cable car, Tegelberg can be reached via marked hiking trails. Possible climbs lead, for example, over the Pöllat Gorge and the Marienbrücke or from the Rohrkopfhütte along the main descent to the Tegelberghaus. The Tegelberg can also be easily reached from the south via the Ahornreitweg. Several via ferratas (Yellow Wall Climb, Tegelbergsteig, Fingersteig) also lead up the mountain.
Ascent from the Tegelbergbahn mountain station to the Branderschrofen
The ascent takes about half an hour. The path begins behind the hang-glider and paraglider landing area; it initially leads through mountain pines and is easy. From the sign “Only for the practiced” there are wire ropes for securing in places.
Shortly before the final ascent to the summit cross, there is a notch in the mountain (approx. 2.5 × 2.5 meters) that provides a wide view of the Forggensee and the surrounding lakes. With strong winds from the north or northwest, it whistles loudly here ( jet effect ).
Further climbs to the summit lead from Branderfleck over the east ridge and from Latschenköpfl over the north ridge. Both require hardly any climbing in the true sense of the word, but surefootedness and a head for heights on the narrow, grassy ridges , which must not be used when wet. Both climbs are rated with an I. degree of difficulty according to the UIAA scale and are neither marked, signposted nor recorded in the usual maps.
Ski runs
In addition to the main run (4.3 km) from the mountain station to the valley station with a difference in altitude of around 900 meters, there are several small lifts at the foot of the mountain.
Ski touring
The Tegelberg is popular with tourers . The difference in altitude between the car park at the valley station ( 802 m ) and the mountain station ( 1707 m ) is around 900 meters. In between there is an ascent route well signposted by the German Alpine Association (DAV). When there is a high avalanche warning level or poor natural snow, ski tourers prefer the secured and snow-covered ski slopes (5.2 km ascent) for ascent.
The route signposted by the DAV leads from the parking lot of the Tegelbergbahn mostly off-piste through the forest to the Rohrkopfhütte ( 1330 m ). Then the route follows forest roads east of the piste; the last 200 meters you climb up on the edge of the slope. Especially towards the end of the tour or when climbing the slopes, there are steep sections for ski touring conditions.
Another ascent to Branderschrofen ( 1881 m ) can be done along the above-mentioned path over the western ridge. This can easily be done with skis up to the beginning of the wire securing. The rest of the way is without skis, in icy conditions crampons are required. Securing on a wire rope is usually not possible in winter due to snow conditions. Snowdrift accumulations and cornices often involve considerable avalanche danger, there is also a risk of falling when stepping errors. A winter ascent is only recommended with sufficient alpine experience.
The descent takes place along the normal slope. From the Branderschrofen-West Ridge, assuming safe conditions, there is the possibility of descending into the north-facing basin ("Grüble") through steep couloirs (sometimes ~ 50 °). In addition to falling rocks, there is a considerable risk of avalanches, as demonstrated by a fatal accident in 2006.
Since 2010/2011 there has been a ski touring educational trail with information boards on the topics of safety, environmental compatibility and ski technology along the DAV ascent route.
Paragliding on the Tegelberg
The main starting point is right next to the mountain station at 1730 m and offers two starting directions with north-west and north-east. The landing site is on the access road, directly below the Falken lift, at 820 m .
The largest local paragliding association is the Ostallgäuer Gleitschirmflieger eV , whose website has a question-and-answer page for both guest and non-flyers.
