history

The lift was built by the South Tyrolean company Hölzl Seilbahnbau .

At the foot of the railway in 1966, during excavation work for the valley station, a rectangular, partially heated antique house and a little further east a bathhouse from the 2nd century came out of the ground. In both buildings there were frescoes in well-preserved color , some of which from the thermal baths are now on display in the Munich State Archaeological Collection .

The Roman settlement of Tegelberg first became known in 1934/35. The bath, with some of its unique findings, was preserved after the excavations and was given a protective structure in 1996 by the municipality of Schwangau .

An incident occurred on August 12, 2011: After a tandem paraglider got caught in the ropes of the Tegelbergbahn, its operation had to be temporarily suspended. 132 people were flown from the mountain station into the valley. 30 passengers from the lower gondola were roped down from a height of around 50 meters by the evening. 19 passengers and the cable car operator in the upper gondola could only be rescued by helicopter the next morning due to the strong wind .
