The Hopfensee is a maximum 2.1 kilometers long lake with a circumference of 6.8 kilometers north of Füssen in the district of Ostallgäu , Bavarian Swabia , Bavaria . With its entire area of 1.84 square kilometers, it belongs to the city of Füssen, but its west bank borders on the community of Hopferau . The pre-alpine lake, which is shallow and not stratified with a maximum depth of 10.4 meters, was formed by the Lechtal glacier during the Würme Ice Age. The Hopfensee has a volume of 8,980 million m³. It drains south via the Hopfensee-Ach, which flows into the Forggensee after a bend to the east .

geology

Natural structure

The pre-alpine lake is located in the main natural area of the pre-  alpine moor and hill country  and the natural area unit  Lech-Vorberge .

geomorphology

The lake is located in the Füssen edge of the Alps. In the north flysch mountains (Rhenodanubian flysch) limit the water and in the west the drumlins of the ground moraine hill country. The Hopfensee is a relic of the northwest bay of the late glacial Füssener See , which filled the Füssen basin as a result of the melting process of the Lechvorland glacier .

sport and freetime

The Hopfensee is a popular holiday and leisure destination all year round. The north-east bank is mainly developed for tourism through the health resort Hopfen am See . There is a campsite on the east bank , the south bank is reed. In addition to bathing, which is already possible from the end of May due to the good warming, rowing and pedal boats are also possible on the lake, as is sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing. The pre-alpine lake is also known as the Swabian Riviera due to its scenic location .

ecology

flora

Extensive reed belts and floating leaf plants from yellow pond rose form the shore zone over large parts. With the exception of the east bank, the typical riparian vegetation is protected by law (Section 30 of the  Federal Nature Conservation Act, legally protected biotopes ). The southern shore of the lake changes into lime-rich bog locations, through which the Füssener Achen and the Hopfensee-Achen flow.
