The old watch factory in Senden, now the Senden GPS business park

The Uhrenfabrik Senden is a former medium-sized watch factory that was closed in 1993 due to environmental pollution.

history

The watch factory was founded in 1947 in the town of Senden (Bavaria) by Erich Rittinghaus and Gustav Eiffert near Neu-Ulm . In its prime, the company employed up to 2,500 people and had a daily production of up to 32,000 watches. The company became particularly famous for its Europa, Ducado and Deluxe travel alarm clocks. The German company Junghans manufactured the movements for wall clocks . The company was sold in December 1988.

One of the two founders, Erich Rittinghaus, was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class in 1967 and became an honorary citizen of the city of Senden. The street in which the former factory building of the watch factory is located is named after him.

In 1991 it was found out that the company had "disposed of" toxic waste through old wells. Chemicals such as cyanide and copper sludge polluted the groundwater for years. That is why the company was closed in 1993 and the former factory premises were converted into the Senden business park.
