Katrin Albsteiger (* 20th November 1983 in Ulm as Katrin Poleschner) is a German politician of the CSU and since May 2020 Mayor of Neu-Ulm . As the state treasurer, she is a member of the presidium of the CSU. From 2013 to 2017 Albsteiger was a member of the German Bundestag .

Life

Albsteiger studied from 2003 to 2008 at the University of Augsburg and at the Australian University of Adelaide Politics with a minor in economics and after graduating worked in the CSU regional management. She initially worked for E.ON and worked for the Ulm / Neu-Ulm municipal utilities from the end of 2011 until she was elected to the German Bundestag in 2013 . After the end of her parliamentary work, she continued her work there in March 2018.

On December 28, 2011 she married Tobias Albsteiger. The couple have two daughters.

Political work

Party career

In 2003 Albsteiger joined the Junge Union Neu-Ulm, held various offices from 2005 and in 2008 moved to the Elchingen municipal council and the Neu-Ulm district council. In 2009 she was elected deputy state chairman of the Junge Union Bayerns. She caused a stir for the first time when she fought against the women's quota aimed for by the party leadership at the 2010 CSU party congress . In their opinion, such a regulation is unjust, it contradicts the principle of free choice. On November 18, 2011, she was elected regional chairman of the Junge Union Bayerns with 92% of the votes. She was the first woman to hold this office. Katrin Albsteiger was a member of the 15th Federal Assembly for the election of the Federal President as a delegate sent by the Bavarian State Parliament . On November 19, 2012, she received the “Young Politician of the Year” award from the specialist journal Politik & Kommunikation in Berlin . The laudation was given by Edmund Stoiber . At the state assembly in October 2013, she decided not to run again for the JU state chairmanship. Her successor was Hans Reichhart . At the German Day of the Junge Union Deutschlands in Inzell on September 19, 2014, she was elected to one of the four Federal Deputy Chairmen, which she remained until 2018. Since 2019 she has been treasurer of the CSU and a member of the party's executive committee. She is still a member of the city council and district council of Neu-Ulm. Albsteiger is also deputy CSU district chairwoman.

Content focus

Her political priorities include education, university policy, federalism, Europe and intergenerational equity. In 2012, on the occasion of the visit by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit , to the Bavarian Mittenwald, she protested against the state financial equalization. In the same year she carried out the campaign “Offensive.Generationen.Gerechtigkeit.” In the CSU together with Edmund Stoiber.

Member of the Bundestag

In the election to the German Bundestag on September 22, 2013, she ran on the state list of the CSU. In the field of list candidates who do not also run directly through a federal constituency, she prevailed against the candidate of the Women's Union, Barbara Lanzinger , in a ballot for the top spot.

In the Bundestag, Albsteiger was a full member of the Committee on European Union Affairs and the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment as well as Secretary of the Bundestag. She was an alternate member of the Economic Cooperation and Development Committee and the Interior Committee . She was also a delegate in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) . Albsteiger was the only member of the CSU who voted against the federal government's pension package in May 2014. She justified this with her rejection of the "pension at 63", which burdens the younger generation too one-sidedly.

In November 2016 Albsteiger was proposed again as a candidate for the CSU state list for the 2017 federal election and in May 2017 was elected as a pure list candidate in 29th place on the state list. In the 2017 federal election, she did not win a parliamentary seat.

Local politics

Albsteiger has been a member of the Elchingen municipal council since 2008 and a city councilor in Neu-Ulm since 2014 as well as a member of the Neu-Ulm district council . In the local elections in Bavaria in 2020 , she applied for the CSU to succeed Gerold Noerenberg (CSU) as Lord Mayor of Neu-Ulm.

In the Mayor election on March 15, 2020, she prevailed in the first ballot with 52.3% against 5 other applicants and has been the incumbent Mayor of Neu-Ulm since taking office on May 1, 2020.
