Political positions

Criticism of smoking in cinema and TV films

With public criticism of smoking in films, Marlene Mortler, as drug commissioner of the federal government, showed solidarity with the German Cancer Aid Foundation , which for the first time urged state and institutional film funding not to support "films in which people smoke". Films with smoke scenes are an advertisement for the cigarette. “Cigarettes are neither cool nor casual, but simply and simply unhealthy,” said the CSU politician in a nationwide interview. Even if she understands the creative freedom of the industry, smoking kills more than 120,000 people in Germany every year. "I don't want to ban smoking as a stylistic device on television, but dealing with it has to be decidedly more sensitive," said Mortler. Science shows very clearly: "The more often young people see in film and television that people are smoking, the greater the likelihood that they will pick up a cigarette themselves." She calls on the film industry to be aware of its own influence on the health of the audience to become.

Controversial cannabis policy

Early 2015 came Mortler under criticism because of their cannabis policies, particularly high volume of social media: Under the Twitter -Hashtag #Mortler and on Facebook , many organizations and stakeholders took the floor. A petition for her resignation received over 20,000 votes within a few days. Among the critics were the Pirate Party and Georg Wurth from the German Hemp Association . Above all, she was accused of incompetence, inadequate qualifications as a “master of rural housekeeping” and inconsistency due to her positive portrayal of alcohol consumption, whereas in 2017 she supported the prevention campaign of German brewers: “There are situations in life that are incompatible with alcohol consumption are. This clearly includes the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding. "

Her stance on proposals to legalize cannabis was also criticized . A point that is frequently criticized is the reasoning behind the question of why alcohol is legal and cannabis illegal, for example: “In contrast to cannabis, alcohol is part of our culture” and “Because cannabis is an illegal drug. Period. ”Due to numerous reviews, Mortler deleted her Facebook account. The demands for resignation were without consequences. She received extensive support within the party and refused to resign voluntarily.

From 2016, the tone against Mortler's insistence on the current cannabis legislation intensified again. On June 1, 2017, Cem Özdemir wrote an open letter to Mortler telling her that her drug policy had "crashed". “There is no impetus for a fundamental reform of drug policy in Germany. Yes, there is even a lack of will to honestly pursue the question of whether today's drug policy is even achieving its goals, ”continues Özdemir, stating in his letter that legal regulation of cannabis and its release to adults are both the problem of the black market and would also make the non-functioning youth protection obsolete.

In May 2019, according to the impression of the Tagesspiegel , Mortler was “presented” in a video by the Youtuber Rezo that was clicked a million times as an example of “blatant incompetence” in matters of drug policy. The newspaper quoted as saying that Mortler considered himself “probably the most frequently insulted MP” with regard to its hemp policy. You have not seen a lobby group that would act as “brutally” as the hemp activists. According to the Berliner Morgenpost , the interviews with Youtubers Tilo Jung recorded by Rezo revealed "at best poor preparation and, at worst, incompetence of the drug officers".
