biography

First steps and training

From the age of 15, Jung wrote as a freelance reporter for Nordkurier , including about his one-year stay in Texas , in the USA . In 2006 he moved to Berlin to study business administration at the Humboldt University , but after a few semesters he switched to the law faculty for a few more semesters. Jung did not graduate in either of the two disciplines. During his studies, Jung worked for various Internet companies, for example at the social network studiVZ , the job exchange for young academics, Absolventa , or at online shops such as Spreadshirt , Zalando and DailyDeal in the areas of customer service, product management, product maintenance and marketing.

Activity as a journalist

In 2011, Jung started working as a freelancer for the Radio Eins media magazine at Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg . As a radio reporter, he was responsible for interviews and reports on social media and international politics, e. B. around the US presidential election .

At the Bertelsmann Gala 2012, Jung was employed as a “Social Media VIP Reporter”, where, under the motto Ask Germany's VIPs anything, he asked prominent guests like Günther Jauch questions that had previously been collected on Facebook. He later continued this idea under the name All you can ask with Erika Steinbach , President of the Federation of Expellees and CDU member of the Bundestag . In a speech to the AGH media committee, he called for state funding for journalists such as a research foundation for investigative journalism instead of the current funding for media institutions. With regard to the debate about the increasing disenchantment with politics , he took the view: "The media are disaffected with politics because they are no longer interested in explaining facts."

At the beginning of February 2013, Jung played the role of the naive, inexperienced reporter for the first time and posted the video clips on his YouTube channel under the name Jung & Naiv - Politics for the Disinterested . In order to technically improve the project, he collected the money for new equipment through crowdfunding via the online platform Krautreporter . From August 2013, the newly founded private broadcaster Joiz Jung included the format in its program, and continued to post the unabridged interviews online after they were broadcast on YouTube .

In spring 2014, Jung became an official member of the Federal Press Conference . As an online journalist, he often published the questions he asked there and the answers he received as a transcript on his social media pages, and later also as videos on his YouTube channel.

Jung deals not only with domestic issues, but also with foreign policy . When the Euromaidan movement took a back seat due to the Crimean crisis, the Jung & Naiv team traveled to Ukraine at their own expense at the beginning of March 2014 . On the occasion of the 2014 European elections , Jung decided to interview representatives of political organizations in Greece , Spain and Italy . These trips were also funded through crowdfunding. In connection with the Gaza conflict in 2014 , he also traveled to Israel and Palestine in July 2014 . With the subtitle The search for an end of a never-ending story , 25 films were made in which activists, journalists and political advisors from both sides had their say.

As a member of the journalist team of the online magazine Krautreporter, Jung published the new interviews not only as videos but also in text form from the end of October 2014. In 2014 he had the most articles of all authors in this magazine.

Jung in the hall of the Federal Press Conference, 2018

At the beginning of 2015, Jung shifted his focus to reporting in the Federal Press Conference (BPK) and published the episodes recorded there on his YouTube channel under the heading BPK for the disinterested . In contrast to the other capital city journalists, his "approach ... [to] inform how the federal government informs". From the middle of April he began to offer short clips from the very long episodes, and soon thereafter also themed cuts of various episodes, so-called "super cuts".

At about the same time, in collaboration with the sociologist and former FAZ journalist Stefan Schulz, he started a podcast format called Wake Up! . In it, they regularly discussed and rated the television news from the public broadcasters . The first podcast was released on April 13, 2015, and the last episode was released on July 21, 2020.

In the summer of 2017, Tilo Jung and his friend and colleague Alexander "Tyler" Theiler shot the documentary Follow Me: Arabian Video Stars in cooperation with the Franco-German television station Arte . The director Farid Eslam chose the team of the political YouTube channel Jung & Naiv as protagonists to interview YouTube stars from the Arab world. In the accompanying web series I Follow , the focus was on the followers of the vloggers and their main topics such as atheism, the role of women, but also censorship and surveillance. Filming locations were in Turkey , on the Syrian border, Egypt and in the United Arab Emirates . The first television broadcast did not take place until March 27, 2018.
