Example of an interview broadcast

Jung & Naiv is a regular political interview program. The first episode appeared under the original title Jung & Naiv - Politics for the disinterested on February 7, 2013 on YouTube . Since May 28, 2013, the content of the format has also been published on Facebook . In 2013 and 2014, Jung & Naiv was broadcast weekly by the private broadcaster Joiz .

On July 18, 2014, the format reported for the first time from the Federal Press Conference under the title Naive Questions (to Angela Merkel ) . By September 16, 2015 at the latest, a federal press conference of around one and a half hours was broadcast publicly in full for the first time, which has been happening regularly since then and was and is a unique selling point among German media . The press conferences of the Federal Government now form a separate Federal Government section for those who are not interested .

Since April 13, 2015 (episode 232), all episodes have also been available on the company's own website. The show is produced by Tilo Jung , Alexander Theiler, Juliane Schreiber and Sarina Balkhausen.

concept

format

For his interviews, the moderator Tilo Jung plays a naive young man who asks his guests basic questions without bias. He represents "an average unsuspecting man at the intellectual level of a 14-year-old" who fundamentally disregards any spatial and linguistic formal distance to his interlocutors. Interview partners are used , are not allowed to use foreign words and have to explain technical terms from the ground up. The interviews are recorded without a precisely defined time frame and published in full. According to Tilo Jung, the conversation should develop naturally.

Jung & Naiv was preceded by a format called All You Can Ask , in which the viewers asked questions in advance of the program, which Jung passed on to the guests. This element has largely been retained in well-known interview partners and was referred to as “extra”, “bonus” or “your naive questions”.

Main topics

During the federal election campaign in 2013 , Tilo Jung mainly interviewed candidate politicians such as Sahra Wagenknecht , Erika Steinbach , Wolfgang Kubicki , Jürgen Trittin and Peer Steinbrück . Jung put interviews from the 30th Chaos Communication Congress online under the motto “CCC for the disinterested” . He talked to Jan Philipp Albrecht , Felix von Leitner and Tim Pritlove about topics such as data protection, the NSA surveillance scandal or whistleblowers, such as B. Chelsea Manning .

When the Maidan movement took a back seat due to the Crimean crisis , the “Jung & Naiv” team decided to travel to Ukraine at their own expense to ask questions about the war in Ukraine since 2014 . There, the Ukrainian journalist Maxim Eristavi put in contact with politicians, journalists and activists. On the occasion of the European elections in 2014 , the team took trips to Greece , Spain and Italy under the title “Jung & Naiv goes Europe” and reported on the political, economic and social problems there. Another series of interviews was recorded in Israel and Palestine during the Gaza conflict in 2014 . There the team met representatives of Israeli politics and the military, but also activists from both sides and representatives of Palestinian organizations.

Young & Live

Since in the course of Corona crisis beginning in 2020 were hampered regular interviews are since 21 March 2020 at irregular intervals under the title Young & Live interviews live stream out. The interviews are therefore uncut and usually last at least an hour, sometimes significantly longer. In contrast to the classic Jung & Naiv episodes, viewers have the opportunity to ask their questions in the live chat moderated by Alexander Theiler. Tilo Jung incorporates these into the interview during the course of the conversation. Furthermore, Jung is supported by Hans Jessen or Wolfgang M. Schmitt as co-moderators. Usually, each guest is asked at the end of the conversation for a book and a film or series recommendation and whether the person something hoarded would.

production

Members

Tilo Jung is the inventor of the format. After a few episodes, he teamed up with the economic and financial expert Alexander Theiler, who has since acted as producer , cameraman and editor . From July 2013, the journalist and rhetoric trainer Hans Hütt expanded the team. Juliane Schreiber has been working as an editor for Jung & Naiv since 2015, and has been conducting her own interviews since 2017. Another member of the team is Sarina Balkhausen.

Manufacturing

Jung recorded the first episode as a 30-minute one-cut video with his cell phone camera . He filmed the other interviews with a digital camera , which also meant a time restriction of around 12 minutes due to the limited recording length. After a successful crowdfunding campaign and the merger with Alexander Theiler, they were able to buy new equipment and film the interviews with one or two other cameras. From May 2013 (for the first time in episode 53), the videos were reworked, including the title and closing sequence with a title melody. The conversation itself remained unabridged in text and length.

Theme song

From episode 53, the videos received their own title melody for the opening and closing credits, which was produced by Brent Sluder's music project Field Dress . Since October 2014 (episode 199) there is a new signature song called Table Talk , again composed by Brent Sluder.

financing

During the federal election campaign in 2013 , “Jung & Naiv” received a grant from Google . Using crowdfunding via the online platform Krautreporter , Jung and his colleague Alexander Theiler were able to collect a sum of 5,900 euros, which they invested in new technical equipment and a new design. This was followed by another crowdfunding campaign with proceeds of 15,000 euros for a trip to Europe during the 2014 European elections . There is also the possibility of supporting the team with donations.

Broadcast on television

After various discussions with broadcasters of public television, Tilo Jung decided on the Swiss private broadcaster Joiz, which went on air in Germany with the offshoot Joiz Germany in the summer of 2013, because he did not have to agree to any editorial control there, but the transmission time requirement meant a reduction of the interviews to 20 minutes. There, Young and Naive - Politics for the Disinterested was always broadcast on Mondays at 8:00 p.m., the first episode on August 19, 2013 was an interview with the SPD candidate for Chancellor at the time, Peer Steinbrück .

The political magazine has been part of the Tuesday evening program since the end of September 2014, and some episodes were even broadcast live , with viewers having the opportunity to ask questions online. Joiz Germany was discontinued on September 16, 2016.

Publications in newspapers and online magazines

In media cooperations, interviews by Jung & Naiv appeared on stern.de . An interview with Glenn Greenwald appeared in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

Since the start of the online magazine Krautreporter in mid-October 2014, Jung & Naivs episodes including a mostly shortened transcript and a comment area that only members can see have been published there.
