Reitau Castle

The Reitau Castle is located in the area of the village of Stambach , Grafendorf bei Hartberg in Styria .

history

Around 1160 Seifried von Kranichberg had a farmyard built, which in 1309 came into the possession of the Counts of Stubenberg . The Stubenberg enfeoffed the Reuter family with the property.

At the beginning of the 14th century, they converted the farm yard into a small moated castle, which they soon owned as a free property . In 1340 it was first mentioned as a castle in Grafendorf. The later name Reitau goes back to the Reuter family.

When Walchum Reuter's family died out in 1427 as a male, the property was divided between his two daughters. Since Hans Zebinger bought his sister-in-law's share, he was soon reunited. Turks and Hungarians caused great damage in their invasions in 1529 and 1532.

When Caspar Zebinger died in 1563, Reitau was again divided between his two daughters. Only the gate and the moat were jointly owned. In 1602 the sisters sold the rule to their aunt Sibilla von Wurmbrand . The Hungarian invasion of 1605 caused major damage to the castle and manor. In 1610 Rudolf von Wurmbrand had the castle rebuilt and enlarged. In 1618 the work was completed.

In the 18th century the castle got its present shape. In 1822 Franz Carl Graf von Wurmbrand sold the rule to Ludwig Graf Schönfeld , from whose descendants Maria Countess Wimpffen acquired it.

The castle has belonged to the Lentz family since 1939.
