Wimpffen (noble family)
Wimpffen (also Count von Wimpffen or Wimpfen ) is the name of an aristocratic family originally from Württemberg , whose members held high military ranks in the French and Austrian armies.
history
The von Wimpffen family was originally called Heermann and was based in Wimpfen am Neckar, Haguenau (Alsace), Augsburg and Nuremberg ; she called herself "von Wimpfen" after her original home. Dominik Heermann, a citizen of Nuremberg, obtained an imperial letter of arms in 1555 . His grandsons Johann Friedrich (* 1581) and Johann Dietrich (* 1583) were raised to imperial nobility in 1658, which was confirmed by Emperor Joseph II (1741–1790) in 1781. Both grandchildren are the founders of the following main lines.
Franz Karl Eduard von Wimpffen (* 1776, † 1842) was a major general in Württemberg and was raised to the rank of count by Emperor Franz II on April 8, 1797. In 1841 he acquired Kainberg Castle near Graz , which the family still owns today.
The head of the first line, the Johann Friedrich tribe , was Freiherr Friedrich Ferdinand Franz von Wimpffen (born March 31, 1805). This was in the royal Danish forest services, whereby this branch in the male line became extinct in the 19th century .
The second line (also called Alsatian line), the Johann Dietrich tribe , later divided into four family branches due to the four sons - Stanislaus, Franz Ludwig, Georg and Felix - of Johann Georg von Wimpffen (1689–1767). The branches still live in Austria, Germany, and the United States today.
