DailyDeal was a German company that operated various websites with voucher offers. According to its own information, the company was active in three countries and counted more than twelve million visitors per month. In addition to Groupon , Dailydeal was the market leader in Germany with a targeted annual turnover of 30 to 40 million euros. In 2014 the company had 60 employees and broke even.

The company offered a certain discount every day if enough prospects came together. In this case, the company receives a commission. The offers were each for a city or region. At the beginning in December 2009, Berlin was the first market. Overall, Dailydeal was active in more than 50 cities and regions in Germany (as of August 2011) and competed with the Groupon portal for market leadership. In Austria and Switzerland , vouchers were offered for another 40 cities and regions (as of March 2011).

The company expanded its product portfolio in 2011 to include so-called verticals . The “Travel Deals” couponing portal was launched on February 17th. Companies in the tourism industry advertise themselves here. On April 19, Dailydeal launched the vertical “Service Deals” and offered craft businesses and service providers the opportunity to win new customers with discounted offers. The offer was initially aimed at Berlin companies. On July 28th, the company started the vertical “Product Deals” and presented offers from manufacturers and dealers of products. On August 17th, “EntertainmentDeals” followed, a vertical with offers from the areas of games, film and music. Finally, on August 24th, Dailydeal presented “B-Deals”. With this offer, Dailydeal wanted to give small and medium-sized companies large customer discounts when purchasing office supplies.

history

Fabian and Ferry Heilemann started the website in December 2009. They have been running the company as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Sales Officer respectively to this day.

In Germany, the company said it was the first couponing portal to go online in December 2009 . Business angels were Michael Brehm , one of the founders of studiVZ , and Stefan Glänzer , who founded the Ricardo internet auction house and the last.fm internet radio .

In February 2010, the company entered the Austrian market and was considered market leader alongside Groupon, which ceased its business activities on January 25, 2016. Markus Pichler, who co-founded the subsidiaries there, was the managing director for Austria and Switzerland until October 2011.

Two further financing rounds followed: In April 2010, the Swiss venture capitalist AdInvest invested several million euros in Dailydeal. In July, money flowed into the startup again. This time, the American venture capitalist Insight Venture Partners invested in order to enable Dailydeal to expand into “neighboring European markets”. In the course of this, Dailydeal also entered the Swiss market on October 15, 2010.

On September 19, 2011 it was announced that the company was acquired by the US Internet company Google for 114 million US dollars. On February 22, 2013, the founders announced the buyback of Dailydeal after suspecting that Google could liquidate the company completely. A good two and a half years later, the Heilemann brothers finally sold Dailydeal in its entirety to Berliner MenschDanke GmbH in November 2015.

In November 2019 DailyDeal filed for bankruptcy in Germany and Austria.

Legal Aspects

The article Dienst / Scheibenpflug, JurPC Web-Doc, deals in detail with the civil law issues relating to voucher purchases on online voucher platforms. 147/2012, Para. 1 - 103. The article examines the legal nature of the online voucher, the content and the parties to the voucher transaction. In addition, it gives an overview of individual legal aspects of couponing with a focus on consumer law issues. The focus is in particular on the elimination of remaining amounts in the event of only partial redemption and the limitation of the period of validity of a voucher.

The AG Cologne and the LG Berlin have so far taken a position on the validity periods of online discount coupons. The effectiveness of the time limit for vouchers purchased via voucher platforms is analyzed in the article Dienst / Scheibenpflug, Consumer and Law 2013, 83. The authors assume that in the case of heavily discounted service vouchers, it may even be appropriate to set a validity period of less than three months in individual cases.

criticism

The discounts offered were highly controversial and were sometimes rated by consumer advice centers as enticing offers. The Wirtschaftswoche said end of March 2011 even a general "warning of Use websites" out.
