Astrid Freudenstein (born October 9, 1973 in Griesbach im Rottal ) is a German politician ( CSU ), ministerial director and since May 14, 2020 the 2nd mayor of Regensburg .

Life and work

After graduating from the Wilhelm-Diess-Gymnasium Pocking in 1992, Freudenstein first completed a traineeship at our Radio Passau. In 1993 she began studying geography and German at the University of Passau , which she completed in 1998. In addition to her studies, she completed another traineeship at the Passauer Neue Presse as a scholarship holder of the Dr. Hans Kapfinger Foundation . After completing her studies, she worked as a journalist for Bayerischer Rundfunk and as an author for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . She became Dr. phil. is doing her doctorate with the work Die Machtphysikerin gegen den Medienkanzler , in which she analyzed the gender aspect in reporting on the 2005 Bundestag election campaign . Since 2010 she has been a lecturer in media studies at the University of Regensburg as a research assistant and academic advisor . In 2018 she became head of the central department at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure .

Party and parliamentary activity

Astrid Freudenstein joined the CSU in 2004 and has been a councilor in Regensburg since 2008 . Surprisingly, it moved into the German Bundestag with ninth place on the CSU state list in the 2013 federal election . There she was a full member of the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs and the Committee on Culture and Media , as well as a deputy member of the Committee on Transport and Digital Infrastructure . Since 2014, she has also chaired the German-Croatian parliamentary group and was a member of the board of the German Bundestag. The main focus of their work in the Bundestag was disability policy. As the rapporteur for the Union parliamentary group, she was significantly involved in the legislative process for the Federal Participation Act . In transport policy, it has successfully campaigned for the inclusion of the 6-lane expansion of the A3 motorway between Regensburg and Nittendorf in the federal transport route plan.

She was one of the 75 Union MPs - 68 from the CDU (26.9% of all CDU MPs) and 7 from the CSU (12.5% ​​of all CSU MPs) - who voted for same-sex marriage in July 2017 .

She could not repeat her entry into the German Bundestag in the 2017 Bundestag election , as the CSU won all constituencies and no member of the Bundestag was able to enter the Bundestag via the state list . However, they moved on July 2, 2019 Marlene Mortler in the 19th German Bundestag after that in the European elections in 2019 to the European Parliament was elected. In the 19th Bundestag she was a full member of the Committee for Labor and Social Affairs . She was a deputy member of the tourism and health committees .

Astrid Freudenstein is a member of the CSU district board of Upper Palatinate and of the state board of the Bavarian Women's Union . In October 2019 she was also elected to the presidium of the CSU.

On March 15, 2020, she stood as candidate for mayor in the city of Regensburg in the 2020 municipal elections and received 29.48% of the valid votes. On March 29, 2020, the runoff election against Gertrud Maltz-Schwarzfischer (SPD, 22.15%) took place. There Freudenstein received 49.26 percent of the validly cast votes. In the constituent meeting of the Regensburg city council, Freudenstein was elected second mayor. As a result, she resigned from her Bundestag mandate on May 15, 2020 and resigned from the Bundestag.

Private

Freudenstein is Roman Catholic, married to BR reporter Gerhard Schiechel and has one child.
