Martti Korhonen

Martti Allan Korhonen (born February 27, 1953 in Oulu ) is a Finnish politician ( left alliance ).

The trained auto mechanic was elected to the Oulu City Council for the Democratic Union of the Finnish People (SKDL) in 1984. In 1988 he was one of the electors of the Liike 88 , who supported the candidacy of Kalevi Kivistös . Korhonen was first elected to the Finnish Reichstag in 1991 . The SKDL had meanwhile merged into the newly founded left alliance. From 1995 to 1998 he was deputy party chairman of the Left Alliance, after which he competed in the election for the party chairmanship, but was defeated by Suvi-Anne Siimes . In the Lipponen II cabinet , which was in office from 1999 to 2003, he served as Minister for Regional and Local Affairs. In 2006 he was elected party leader of the Left Alliance, but resigned after the party's poor performance in the 2009 European elections . He was succeeded by Paavo Arhinmäki .

Korhonen, who enjoys rallying and sailing in his spare time and is interested in music, had been married to Riitta Korhonen (née Tuukkanen) since 1972, who died of cancer in the summer of 2005. He is the father of two sons and has lived in the Koskela district of Oulu since childhood.
