Paavo Arhinmäki

Paavo Erkki Arhinmäki (born December 13, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish politician ( left alliance ).

In 2001 Arhinmäki became a member of Helsinki City Council. In addition, from 2001 to 2005 he was chairman of the Left Youth ( Vasemmistonuoret ), the youth organization of the Left Alliance . In 2007 he was elected to the Finnish Parliament . In June 2009 he became party leader of the Left Alliance. After the parliamentary elections in 2011 , in which Arhinmäki was the most successful candidate in the Helsinki constituency with 17,226 votes, he became Minister of Culture and Sports in the cabinet of Katainen . In Finland's 2012 presidential election , he was a candidate for the Left Alliance and came sixth with 5.5% of the vote. He advocates that Finland should not become a full member of NATO, which Arhinmäki considers a relic from the Cold War. Further topics in the election campaign were the growing gap between rich and poor as well as the behavior of the Finns towards minorities, which had come to the fore in particular due to the enormous success of the "True Finns" in the 2011 elections. At the beginning of April 2014, the left-wing alliance left the government because of social cuts and Arhinmäki resigned from his ministerial office.

Arhinmäki studied political science. He is married to the veterinarian Päivi Lahti and the couple have a daughter (* 2012). At the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Russia , he gained broader public attention when he waved the rainbow flag and wanted to demonstrate a protest sign for more gay rights ( LGBT in Russia ) in Russia.
