history

Albeck Castle

The name of the place Albeck (in older documents Alpeck or Albegge) comes from its geographical location "on the eastern corner of the Alb".

The former “town” emerged from the hamlet of Albeck Castle . The location can be seen well on the engraving by Matthäus Merian from 1643. The castle, expanded into a fortress in the early modern period, was largely destroyed in 1704. The remains with the tower are privately owned.

Reign of Albeck

The castle Albeck was the center of the rule of the noble free men of Albeck. The Lords of Albeck founded an Augustinian canon monastery in Steinheim am Albuch . Later the rule came to the Counts of Werdenberg ( Werdenberg-Albeck line ).

Albeck in the Ulm countryside

The Counts of Werdenberg sold the "city" of Albeck in 1383 to the imperial city of Ulm , which incorporated the town into its land. Albeck was the seat of an upper office of the city of Ulm. After the battle of Nördlingen , the victorious imperial troops burned Albeck down in 1635. In the War of the Spanish Succession, French and Bavarian troops destroyed Albeck Castle in 1704.

After mediatization

In 1803, Albeck was incorporated into the Electorate of Bavaria in the course of mediatization and became the seat of a Bavarian regional court and rent office. In 1810 Albeck fell to the Kingdom of Württemberg and was the seat of the Oberamt Albeck from 1810 to 1819 , which then came to the Oberamt Ulm .

Incorporation

On February 29, 1972, Albeck was incorporated into the city of Langenau.

The best-known son of the town is Robert Bosch (1861–1942), founder of Robert Bosch GmbH and the Robert Bosch Foundation . He spent the first eight years of his life in what is now the Gasthaus zur Krone in Albeck. A plaque commemorates him.

Carl Friedrich Alexander Bosch , the father of Carl Bosch , who developed the Haber-Bosch process for the preparation of ammonia together with Fritz Haber, was also born in Albeck . He was also a son of Servatius Bosch, the Albeck owner of the crown.

societies

There is a lively club life in Albeck. The Liederkranz Albeck 1900 eV is active in the musical field. The children's choir, youth choir and the mixed choir, which are all led by choir director Andreas Schulz, not only provide musical enrichment for village life through regular concerts in the Robert Bosch Hall, but also through other activities such as Advent singing or the annual Lindenfest . A highlight is the a cappella open air, which takes place every year as part of the Linden Festival on the fairground in front of the Robert Bosch Hall.

Pear variety

Albecker butter pears

The Albecker Butterbirne , also known as Ulmer Butterbirne , is an old pear variety that was first found on the Steige between Ulm and Albeck. The variety was first described in 1868 as the Albecker Steigbirne . After 1880 the Scheerer tree nursery in Albeck increased it and brought it to the market. The butter pear is similar to the autumn egg pear described by Johann Volkmar Sickler as early as 1801.
