The Swiss preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 took place on December 10, 2011 under the title The Big Decision Show. The winner was the band Sinplus from the canton of Ticino with the song Unbreakable .

format

concept

Just one day after the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 , in which Switzerland and Anna Rossinelli finished last in the final, it was announced that a similar preliminary decision principle would also be applied for 2012. The finale, which will take place in the Bodensee-Arena in Kreuzlingen like last year , consists of 14 songs. Six of them come from an internet vote, two are nominated by the Italian-language broadcaster RSI , three each come from the French-speaking broadcaster TSR and the German-speaking radio DRS 3 . Unlike usual, the songs are presented in two-minute versions, although they still have to be sent in three-minute versions. In addition, the contributions may not be published before September 1, 2011.

Preliminary rounds

Internet selection

Between September 1 and 30, 2011, performers could upload their contributions to the eurovisionplattform.sf.tv website . The nationality of the singers and the language of the songs were optional, so that in addition to Swiss singers, interpreters from Belgium , Denmark , South Africa and the United States also took part. A total of 221 songs were submitted. Voting ran from October 16 to 30, with the finalists announced on November 11.

Among the participants were Lys Assia , the winner of the first Eurovision Song Contest , the Dane Peter Andresen , who represented his country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 , the American dance singer Ultra Naté , the winner of the third MusicStar season Fabienne Louves in a duet with Patric Scott , the Germany-sucht-den-Superstar participant Zazou Mall, the winner of the South African counterpart, Heinz Winckler , and the British The X Factor participants Same Difference and Maria Lawson.

A registration on the website was necessary for the voting, every internet user could give four votes to all songs. In addition, a jury voted in a 50% / 50% ratio. On November 10, Lys Assia was confirmed as the first qualifier on Twitter with the song C'était ma vie , which was written by Ralph Siegel , and the remaining five songs followed the following day.

Sara McLoud's contribution had to be subsequently disqualified, as it was published as an acoustic version in 2009. The group Atomic Angels moved up with the song Black Symphony .

final

The big decision-making show took place on December 10, 2011 in the Bodensee-Arena in Kreuzlingen and, as in the previous year, was moderated by Sven Epiney . A three-person jury, consisting of the presenter Nik Hartmann , the musician and actor Carlos Leal and the singer Stämpf , commented on the fourteen performances, but had no influence on the result; the winner was chosen by a telephone vote alone.

In the run-up to the final, Lys Assia in particular received a lot of media attention. Had she won, she would have been by far the oldest singer at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 at the age of 88 to ever take part in the competition. She would also have held the record for the two most divergent entries in the competition, at 54 years since her last one in 1958 . For composer Ralph Siegel it would also have been the 20th participation in the competition.

In the end, however, the band Sinplus won with Unbreakable . Chiara Dubey and Ivo were also among the top three. The exact placements were announced after the broadcast.

Eurovision Song Contest

Since Switzerland is not part of the Big Five (the Eurovision countries that contribute the most money to the competition - Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom), the country took part in the first semi-final on May 22nd. This took place in the Azerbaijani capital Baku , since last year's winners Ell and Nikki came from this country. Ultimately, Sinplus missed the finals, they finished 11th.
