Karl Schneider (born May 21, 1934 in Mainflingen ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1980 to 1987 he was State Minister in Hesse and from 1991 to 1994 State Minister in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Life and work

After graduating from high school, Schneider studied law in Frankfurt am Main , completed a legal clerkship at the Darmstadt Regional Court and then worked in the judiciary. Since the 1980s he has also been involved in hiking clubs and was President of the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Clubs from 1993 to 2007 . During his tenure in 1996, the first German Hiking Day after 60 years on the East German side took place in Wernigerode . In 2001, the association started the Hiking Germany initiative together with the German Tourism Association . In 2002 the first edition of the association magazine Wanderzeit was published. In 2004, the Quality Trail Walkable Germany was awarded for the first time .

Political party

Schneider joined the Socialist German Student Union during his studies , joined the SPD and in 1956 became chairman of the SPD local association Mainflingen.

MP

Schneider was a community representative of the community of Bickenbach and a member of the district council in the Darmstadt district . He was a member of the Hessian state parliament from May 8, 1973, when he replaced MP Heinrich Baumann , until 1991 and was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from October 1976 to March 1980.

Public offices

On May 13, 1980, Schneider was appointed Minister of State for State Development, Environment, Agriculture and Forests in the State Government of Hesse led by Prime Minister Holger Börner . With the formation of an SPD minority government tolerated by the Greens, he was appointed minister of education on July 4, 1984 , but left the government on April 23, 1987 due to the defeat of the SPD in the state elections. He later switched to state politics in Rhineland-Palatinate and was appointed Minister for Agriculture, Viticulture and Forestry on May 21, 1991 in the state government led by Prime Minister Rudolf Scharping . When Scharping switched to federal politics, he left the government on October 26, 1994.
