Mainflingen is a district of the municipality of Mainhausen in the Offenbach district in southern Hesse . He is known for his time signal transmitter , which controls almost all radio clocks in Western Europe.

Geographical location

The place is about 10 km northwest of Aschaffenburg . The Main runs directly to the east .

history

Mainflingen was called Manolfingen in medieval documents , after the founder Manolf ( Germanic first name ), the ending in -ingen is a sign of a foundation during the migration period .

In the years 775, 793, 796 and 799 a donation of real estate to the Lorsch monastery in the Manolfinger marca was recorded in the Lorsch Codex . At that time the place belonged to the Franconian Maingau .

From the Middle Ages to the secularization of 1803 Mainflingen belonged to the Electorate of Mainz , after which the place came to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt .

On the opposite side of the Main near Dettingen , the French are defeated by an Austro - English army in 1743 ( Battle of Dettingen ).

On January 1, 1977, Mainflingen was merged with the neighboring town of Zellhausen by state law to form the new municipality of Mainhausen as part of the regional reform in Hesse .

In 1978 the neighboring motorway bridge over the Main was opened to traffic. There was once a large gravel works near Mainflingen . Operations ceased in the 1980s. What remains are three lakes: the Mainflinger bathing lake, a large nature reserve lake and a fishing lake.

Population development

In 1834 Mainflingen had 606 inhabitants. By 1939 the number had almost doubled to 1120. In 1961 there were 2040 and 1970 3017 inhabitants. On June 30, 2008 Mainflingen had 4189 inhabitants. On December 31, 2013 the population was 4027.

The Catholic Church of St. Kilian is located on the banks of the Main . The building in classical style was completed in 1821 based on a design by Georg Moller .

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Georg Massoth and approved on June 2, 1955 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.

The mold is an allusion to the nickname of the Mainflinger Maoflinger mold , for whose origin there are different stories. The wave bar symbolizes the Main.

The flag was approved on October 25, 1956 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.

The district road K 185, which leads to the L 2310 , runs through the village . The motorway connection 48 (Mainhausen) of the federal motorway 45 can be reached via the L 2310 .

The Kreis-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft Offenbach (KVG ) acts as a local public transport company and authority in the Rhein-Main transport association in the local public transport sector .

There are two large transmitters in Mainflingen . They are used for commercial long-wave radio (especially the distribution of the DCF77 time signal ) and medium- wave radio . Their range is over 2000 km, which covers all of Central Europe and around 100 million radio clocks receive a time signal.
