The Main Bridge Mainflingen is a structure on the Federal Motorway 45 , which crosses the Main as the state border between Hesse and Bavaria at the level of the Mainhausen district of Mainflingen in Hesse or Kleinostheim in Bavaria . At kilometer 253.7 of the motorway, it spans the Main at kilometer 76.630 and foreland areas. The bridge lies between the junctions at Kleinostheim and Mainhausen .

The Main Bridge was built as part of the construction of the new motorway from Gießen to Aschaffenburg . It cost 17.6 million marks. Construction began in 1976, and in 1978 the bridge was opened to traffic. The girder bridge has a superstructure for each directional lane, which is designed for three lanes and one hard shoulder.
Preliminary planning has started for a new bridge. In 2017, the design of a bridle construction bridge was selected as the winning design in an ideas competition of the North Bavarian autobahn directorate. Construction is not expected to start before 2023 and will take around 6 years. The costs are estimated at around 85 million euros.

The 449.06 m long bridge consists of a prestressed concrete girder bridge . A four-span approach bridge with a length of 168.36 m and uniform spans of 42.09 m is arranged on the right-hand side of the Main. An expansion joint on a separating pillar is followed by the three-span 278.06 m long river bridge with spans of 72.53 m in the right Main area, 133 m in the middle area and 72.53 m in the left Main area.

The structural system of the prestressed concrete bridges has the continuous beam in the longitudinal direction . In the transverse direction, the superstructures have a single-cell, 19.25 m wide box girder cross-section, the base plate of which is 9.85 m wide and the foreland bridge has a constant construction height of 3.0 m. In the main opening above the Main, the construction height is 4.8 m and decreases in the neighboring fields to 3.0 m at the western abutment or at the dividing pillar.

Construction work

North-east view

The superstructures of the bridge were built using the incremental launching method. The right-Main Main Clock Basement was built next to the dividing pillar. The first step consisted of the construction of the approach bridge to the east, which was pushed 20 m over the abutment to clear the production facility. In the second step, the bridge was pushed in from both sides. For this purpose, the right half of the bridge over the Main was manufactured in the cycle system on the dividing pillar. For the other half, a second cellar was built on the left bank of the Main, behind the western abutment . A 25.5 m high stationary auxiliary pylon on the pushed-in superstructure, from which the superstructure was suspended, as well as auxiliary supports in the edge field ensured sufficient stability of the construction, which overhangs the Main by a maximum of 66.5 m. A 0.4 m long gap remaining in the middle of the bridge was concreted locally. This was followed by the installation of the running over the whole length of the bridge tendons .

The different construction heights of the river bridge were compensated for by detachable prefabricated parts under the hollow girders in order to enable displacement.
