Otto Brues

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Brües (born May 1, 1897 in Krefeld , † April 18, 1967 in Krefeld) was a German writer.

Life

Otto Brües took part in the First World War as a soldier from 1916 . He then studied German and art history at the universities in Cologne and Bonn . He broke off this course in 1922 and subsequently worked as an editor for the features section of the Kölnische Zeitung , and since 1934 as head of the feature section. He also wrote for the Düsseldorfer Zeitung and, during National Socialism, for the National Socialist cultural magazine Rheinische Blätter . In October 1933 he was one of 88 German writers who signed the pledge of loyal allegiance to Adolf Hitler . From 1937, Brües was a member of the NSDAP and an officer in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War .

After the end of the war he initially lived in the Upper Bavarian town of Au . In 1950 he moved to Düsseldorf, and from 1955 he lived again in his hometown of Krefeld. From 1953 to 1963 he was a lecturer for theater criticism at the University of Cologne, and he also wrote for the cultural section of the Düsseldorf newspaper Der Mittag . From 1955 he was a freelance writer.

Several of his works were placed on the list of literature to be segregated in the Soviet zone of occupation and in the German Democratic Republic .

The city of Krefeld set up a “Niederrheinisches Literaturhaus” in the last home of the author, who had been compromised by the Nazis. The writer's daughter, the art historian Eva Brües , had bequeathed her parents' house to the city on condition that they set up a corresponding cultural institution there.
