The Krefeld City Archive is the archive of the independent city of Krefeld and stores archive material from eight centuries. As the city's “memory”, it has the task of preserving the city's tradition, making it accessible and making it accessible to the public. It is located behind the town hall in the Kempener Feld district north of Krefeld city center.

history

A city archive according to today's understanding has existed since 1905, when the old files of the city administration stored in the town hall were systematically sorted for the first time. After the relocation to the basement of the town hall in 1934, the archive material was recovered largely intact, despite the partial destruction of the building in the Second World War . However, many documents that had long been archivable were lost in the offices, so that the urban tradition, especially from the Nazi era and the Weimar Republic, is very sketchy.

In 1959, under the direction of the first specialist archivist Guido Rotthoff, the company moved to the basement of a former restaurant and brewery on Lutherische-Kirch-Straße. In 1982 the city archive moved into its new building next to the “ city house ” bought by the city from the United Seidenwebereien AG (Verseidag) .

From 1988 Paul-Günter Schulte was in charge of the city archive. Among other things, the first computer and the “Faust” indexing software were introduced under him. In 2009, today's archive manager, Olaf Richter, became his successor.

A new building has been under construction behind the magazine since 2017, into which the city's Technical Service Center (TDZ) will move in 2019. In addition, the city archives get there more Magazine surfaces that will be so great in something like the old magazine, and a black space for treating contaminated archival materials.
