The Archives Act of North Rhine-Westphalia ( Law on the Protection and Use of Public Archives in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia - ArchivG NRW) of March 16, 2010 specifies how the archives of the state are to be permanently secured, made usable and scientifically saved by the state archive recycle is.

The validity of the law also extends to municipalities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, municipal associations and other public law institutions subject to the supervision of the state. After around 20 years, the law replaced the first archive law of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia of May 16, 1989, which had been passed by the state parliament with a time limit.

Section 7, which regulates the archival blocking periods, is particularly important for the use of archive material . According to this, documents can generally only be viewed by archive users 30 years after their creation, documents with special confidentiality regulations after 60 years. The protection periods for personal documents are either 10 years after death if the year of death is known, 100 years after birth if the year of death is unknown, or 60 years after the documents were created if neither the year of death nor the year of birth are known.
