Mining and Saint Barbara

Headframe of the main shaft system in Overath-Steinenbrück

Already in the High Middle Ages, lead was being mined in the entire area around Steinenbrück for the construction of the Cologne Cathedral and the Altenberg Cathedral. Mining in Steinenbrück has been securitized for the Lüderich mine since the mid-19th century . There were also many smaller mines that were either consolidated with the Lüderich mine or remained independent, such as the Achenbach , Arago , Bavaria and Hermann mines .

Barbara Cross

A cross visible from afar is intended to remind of the mining industry and the miners of Lüderich . The 15-meter-high Barbara Cross was erected in 1997 on a dump of the former ore mine. A plaque shows: “Barbarakreuz - This cross is dedicated to the miners of the Lüderich mine in the name of their patron saint, Saint Barbara. Erected by the parish of St. Barbara in Steinenbrück with the help of many donors. September 6, 1997. Reimund Fischer, pastor. "

Today there is a golf course in the vicinity of the mine, which was closed in 1978 . The headframe of the main shaft is visible from afar as a memorial at its old location. The former machine house is now the clubhouse of the Lüderich Golf Club . One of the old elevated tanks was converted into a carport.

Religions

Catholic Church of St. Barbara

Due to the increased mining activity on Lüderich at the end of the 19th century, there was a strong increase in new settlers around the mine, including in Steinenbrück, who found work in the nearby mining industry. The Catholic Church, which was completed in 1916, was named Saint Barbara Church in reference to the patron saint of miners . It was not until 1965 that the Protestant Peace Church was inaugurated in the Neichen district . However, it had to be given up in March 2015 due to lower membership numbers. A former air raid shelter is just a few steps away from the Barbarakreuz. The bunker in Steinenbrück has housed a Marian grotto since May 1st, 2011.

Hiking trails

In addition to some other hiking trails, the Way of St. James leads to Santiago de Compostela coming from Marburg with the next stage destination Cologne through Steinenbrück. In the other direction, the Elisabethpfad leads, a pilgrimage route coming from Cologne towards Marburg.
