The mining in Erzrevier Bensberg has on Lüderich a long history. This is discussed in detail in the article about the Lüderich mine . The Lüderich mining field moved from the Overath urban area to the Rösrath urban area over a distance of around four kilometers from north to south over the mountain with the deposits : North camp, Bleifelder deposit, spring, Bergmannsfreude, summer, hanging summer, Franziska and Franziskaquergang. In the south, in the Hopesthal district, the Bergsegen mine followed . On the western slopes, the mines were mine Anacker , pit Aurora , pit Gustav Bishop , pits Nestor and Peter , pit Schnepfenthal , pit Volta , pit Wallenstein and pit Wallenstein II . On the eastern slope was in the vicinity of the road on Heidenkeller the pit Leibnitz .

Mining memories

Headframe of the main shaft system at Overath-Steinenbrück

The headframe of the main shaft is visible from afar as a memorial at its old location, the former machine house is now the clubhouse of the Lüderich Golf Club . One of the old elevated tanks was converted into a carport. From the shaft dump of the main shaft, the stainless steel Barbara cross greets you far into the Bergisches Land . A former air raid shelter in Steinenbrück near the cross, which was used as a training room for the mine rescue team after the Second World War , now houses a Marian grotto.

At the edge of the rear Rothenbach valley, the headframe of the Franziskaschacht is also hidden in the forest as a memorial. The former Steiger's house and the wash house can be found in the lower part of the valley right next to the entrance to the Franziskastollen, which is now sealed with concrete.

Barbara Cross

Barbara Cross

A stainless steel cross was erected at the top of the tailings pile of the main shaft. On a prominent point in the area, it stands out in the area and is therefore an eye-catcher. The suggestion for the construction came from Mayor Siegfried Raimann . Then the cross was erected in August 1997 by the Catholic parish of St. Barbara. It is 15 meters high. The inauguration took place on September 6, 1997 by Auxiliary Bishop Klaus Dick .

The cross bears the following inscription:

This cross is dedicated to the miners of the Lüderich mine in the name of their patron saint, Saint Barbara.
It was built by the Catholic parish of St. Barbara Steinenbrück with the help of many donors. September 6, 1997 Reimund Fischer pastor
