St. Barbara Steinenbrück

The Catholic parish church of St. Barbara can be found in Steinenbrück , a district of Overath in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . The church patroness is St. Barbara .

architecture

The neo-Romanesque church with a basilica floor plan, five bays and a semicircular choir closure is an unplastered building made of irregular field stones. In each of the side aisles, five arched windows open up, while the upper aisle is opened by two triplet windows and a simple arcade window in the first yoke. The gable roof, the roof of the apse and the cylindrical tower flanking the apse are covered with slate. The simple facade is structured by an arched portal set in a narrow aedicule-like enclosure, which is crowned by a large rose window.

The free-standing, cylindrical campanile was built in 1963 based on a design by the Steinenbrück architect Wilhelm Pollen. The lower part of the church tower is made of reddish field stones, while the upper third is provided with rectangular, light-colored panels that are decorated with ornaments or with narrow slits that serve as sound holes . The tower is crowned by a stylized bronze rooster.

history

Heinrich Römer was a senior climber at the Lüderich mine . He came from a Catholic family and was accordingly committed. In 1900 he and his family moved into the newly built Steigerhaus in Steinenbrück across from the old processing plant . He was a member of the church council of St. Walburga in Overath . With the increased mining of ores towards the end of the 19th century, the population around the mine area also grew in general, including in Steinenbrück. The way from Steinenbrück to Overath was felt to be very long. That is why they wanted a church in their new place of residence Steinenbrück. Together with several like-minded people, Römer therefore founded the St. Barbara church building association on April 13, 1902 . Römer was elected chairman. The foundation stone for the St. Barbara Church in Steinenbrück was laid on May 1, 1914; it was inaugurated two years later on April 2, 1916 . It was not until 1928 that the Rectorate St. Barbara Steinenbrück became its own parish. The church is dedicated to Saint Barbara . She is not only one of the fourteen emergency helpers , she is also considered the patron saint of miners . It was not until 1963 that the church tower was built using a combination of greywacke and exposed concrete according to the plans of the Steinenbrück architect Wilhelm Pollen.
