Stadtmitte , originally Gladbach , is the central district No. 21 of Bergisch Gladbach and belongs to the statistics district 2 of the city.

history

When the two cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg were merged to form a new city of Bergisch Gladbach in 1975, new structures also had to be organized. A decision was made to introduce residential spaces which in some cases no longer corresponded to the earlier parts of the city that were “felt” by the residents . For the center of the old town of Bergisch Gladbach, the name Gladbach was initially chosen as a place to live. This led occasionally to misunderstandings as to what exactly was meant by this. Therefore, the city council of Bergisch Gladbach decided on January 12, 1999 that the name Bergisch Gladbach should only apply to the entire city area. For the previous residential area in Gladbach , the council decided to introduce the name city center . However, it is by no means just a so-called “center” around Konrad-Adenauer-Platz . It is much larger and has partially acquired areas from other parts of the city. For example, the former Gronau district previously went as far as the “Driescher Kreuz” . With the reorganization, Gronau ended at the railway embankment. Anything in between was added to the city center - even the Gronau inn

Mills on the round

Of the numerous mills on the Strunde , which used its water power, there were a total of eight mills in the city center, namely the Vollmühle , the Hammermühle , the Gladbacher Mühle , the Buchmühle , the Schnabelsmühle , the Gohrsmühle , the Cederwaldmühle and the Gronauer Mühle .

Mining and lime kiln

Mining has been practiced throughout the Strundetal for centuries. In many places you can also see former quarries where the limestone for the lime kilns was quarried. At the S-Bahn station there are still remains of a lime kiln that was listed a few years ago.

population

According to the EDP population register, the city center had a total of 11,284 residents on June 30, 2017 (1,943 of them foreigners). This made it by far the most populous residential area in Bergisch Gladbach . The relationship between younger and older citizens is unbalanced. The age group over 65 years with 2,646 inhabitants (of which 221 foreigners) was significantly stronger than the age group under 18 years with only 1,794 (of which 265 foreigners).
