Cederwald is a district in the city center of Bergisch Gladbach .
history
The name Cederwald is based on the name Zederwald , mentioned in 1582 , which is recorded in the original cadastre west of Bensberger Straße. The cedar forest stretched from Strunde to Bensberger Straße on the premises of the Zanders paper factory . There are different statements for the interpretation of the determinant ceder / cedar . Most likely the origin of the name from the Latin silva caedua (= Hauwald), from which Caeduerwald and then cedar forest developed according to folk etymology . After the dialect form Zidderwald (= Zitterwald), the name can be explained by the vegetation with poplars and aspens , the leaves of which have trembled in the wind. A less likely interpretation comes from the 20th century. Then a connection to Germanic mythology was constructed. The Cederwald was a gloomy grove in which criminals and prisoners were executed who trembled when they entered the dark place.
