Location of Steufelsberg in Bergisch Gladbach |
Steufelsberg is a district in the city center of Bergisch Gladbach .
history
The name Steufelsberg takes up an old field and settlement name that was first mentioned in 1595 in the form of Stöffelsberg . The estate on Steufelsberg comprised around five acres of land around 1750 and developed into a small hamlet with 21 residents by 1858 .
etymology
The meaning of the field name remains largely unclear. The defining word could go back to the dialectic short form of the first name Christophorus Stoffel . It is possible that Steufel could etymologically also be related to the Middle High German stouf and accordingly designate an elevation or a towering rock.
