history

Beit Jala is a Palestinian city in the Bethlehem district . it is about 1.8 km from Bethlehem and 10 km from Jerusalem . The separation wall erected by Israel occupies a large area and restricts freedom of movement.

Alongside Cologne and Jena, Bergisch Gladbach is one of the few German cities that has a partnership with a Palestinian municipality. The first initiatives go back to the founding of the association “City Partnership Bergisch Gladbach - Beit Jala eV” in 2010 with the aim of promoting relationships between the citizens and organizations of both cities. Under the motto bridges instead of walls for people in Palestine and Israel, the association promotes peaceful coexistence in the region. Through his corresponding initiatives, they came closer to founding a town twinning.

After the approval of the councils of the two twin cities, the town twinning document was signed by the mayors of both cities in 2010 at the New Year's reception in 2011 in the Bensberg town hall .

In order to involve the public more in the new partnership, they are considering creating a permanent location that expresses this. This resulted in the creation of a playground, which was inaugurated on September 12, 2015 and entered in the street directory.
