Lime kilns Cox

The lime kilns Cox floor monument is located on Johann-Wilhelm-Lindlar-Straße / corner Jakobstraße in the city center of Bergisch Gladbach .

description

The Cox lime kilns are part of the former Jacob Cox plant. In 1852 he acquired the site, known as the Kellerchen Busch , and built two lime kilns on it. The construction of a third lime kiln followed in 1858. The associated quarry was a little above the kilns on Marienhöhe . These were ovens for permanent operation, into which crushed limestone and coal were poured alternately from above . After the fire, the building lime could be pulled out from below.

history

The lime kiln was for Bergisch Gladbach for centuries an important industry. From the 17th to the 20th century, around 80 lime kilns can be found in the Paffrath Kalkmulde . The lime distillery had good prerequisites here because the deposits of limestone and lignite were close together. The lime distillery experienced its first high point in the 18th century with the construction of Bensberg Castle and the Augustusburg and Falkenlust castles in Brühl . The last time lime was burned in Bergisch Gladbach was in 1958, in the Cox lime kilns.

Ground monument

According to previous knowledge, the lime kilns contain an abundance of remains in the ground that can be scientifically evaluated, such as wall foundations, soil discoloration and individual finds. Then, in the course of its operating history, individual layers and piles of debris developed in the area. These contain fossils, plant remains, broken ceramics and tools as well as everyday relics that are informative about the way of life and work of the operator. The ovens and their surroundings are therefore important for the economic history of the city as well as for the work and life of people in the city of Bergisch Gladbach and the surrounding region.

There is therefore a public interest in maintaining and protecting the facility. The area was entered under No. 16 in the list of archaeological monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
