from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Britanniahütte is a district in the Gronau district of Bergisch Gladbach .

history

The Britanniahütte is a former ironworks in which iron ore from the region was smelted. It was built in 1846 by the Britannia union , for which Eduard Knobel acted as authorized agent. In 1980 part of Jakobstrasse was also renamed Britanniahütte , because this part belonged to the former smelter site for loading the material for transport by rail .

Mining

In 1846, an iron ore smelting company was established in Gronau, not far from Mülheimer Straße, which was completed in 1842. This hut was owned by the Britannia union, which had the lending rights to several pits in the Paffrath Kalkmulde . The company had given it the name Piddelbornmühle . With the transfer of ownership to the London attorney John Gurney, the hut was renamed Britanniahütte in 1860 . The company was shut down in 1874. Individual parts of the building are still standing to this day.
