The Gierather mill was initially a fulling mill , later a grinding mill and ultimately also a grain mill in the Gronau district of Bergisch Gladbach an der Strunde .

history

The oldest document about a mill on the Strunde in Bergisch Gladbacher area dates from 1345. It describes that the Cologne priest Jakob Keye sold Hermann von Gierath's relatives, namely his widow Aleidis and their children, a pension of six marks. At that time there was only one mill in Gierath. It is not known what function it had. Around 1400 the Gierath mill was used as a fulling mill for Tirtei and Tirteystoff. This was a lower quality blend of wool and linen than the usual woolen material, which was mainly used for men's clothing.

In the record of the Bach Court of 1584, the information appears for the first time that the Gierath mill was a double mill. This means that there was a mill on either side of the strunde, which were driven by two undershot water wheels. In 1773 there was still a grinding mill . She was the last representative of a once flourishing trade. Certainly, swords were no longer sharpened, but knives , scythes and comparable cutting tools. However, the fulling mill had changed its function to an oil mill with a barley peeling system. The mill on the left belonged to Hermann Opterbeck in 1823 and that on the right to Wilhelm Eulenberg from Mülheim, who also owned the Diepeschrath mill on the Mutzbach. Everyone ran an oil mill. That was still the case in 1834, when everyone used two presses, which can only be used alternately, for oil production.

A frequent change of ownership since the mid-19th century shows that the mill era was coming to an end. Around 1900, the fruit mill to the north belonged to the Röhrig siblings who also lived here. When the grinding customers slowly failed, Heinrich Röhrig converted the mill into a turner's shop . In the address book from 1930 in Gierath No. 7 Anna Röhrig is registered, who ran a milling business in addition to guest and agriculture . In 1939 Anna Röhrig retired. The inn was managed by Mrs. Adolf Mosbach and Erich Esche worked as a miller. In the times of need after the Second World War , the fruit mill experienced a brief renaissance. In the mill opposite, Italian marble sculptors had been working since the end of the 19th century , who used the mill to grind and cut marble. In 1970, both mill wheels were dismantled to allow the Strunde to flow freely. The Röhrig siblings inherited from his mother Adolf Mosbach jun. In the former fruit mill, a garden restaurant was first built, later a Korean restaurant. In 2004 this building was converted for residential purposes. The southern part was redesigned into a residential complex in 1999 by the architect Bruno Wasser. The half-timbered house belonging to the mill was covered with a historic thatched roof.
