Wolfsmaar is a district in the Alt Refrath district of Bergisch Gladbach .
history
The name Wolfsmaar takes up an earlier field name, which indicated a damp and swampy terrain. The basic word maar is etymologically related to the Old High German meri (= sea, lake) and Middle High German mer (= sea). This is understood to mean standing or swampy water. In field names, the word maar refers to a former river or stream bed. The determinant wolf indicates that wolves were observed here earlier.
School at the Wolfsmaar
A plot of land on Wolfsmaar was made available as early as 1734 for the construction of a school. However, the first plans to build a school did not materialize. In 1825 the Prussian government introduced compulsory schooling. That was decisive for the beginning of the construction work, which led to the completion of the schoolhouse in 1829. The building has been used by the Bergisch Gladbach Creativity School Association (coll. Krea ) since 1977 .
