biography

Peter Opladen was born in Flittard, the youngest of three sons. The father, Heinrich Opladen and the mother Elisabeth, b. Steinbüchel run a farm there.

He spent his childhood in Flittard, his father died when he was 12 years old, and his mother died four years later. He attended the Quirinus-Gymnasium in Neuss and after passing his Abitur he studied theology and history at the University of Bonn . After being ordained a priest in Cologne Cathedral on March 15, 1902, he first became chaplain in Lennep , and two years later he was appointed rector's office in Obereip in the Westerwald . Here, in addition to his work as a pastor, he found the opportunity for serious and historical studies. He was able to acquire a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Bonn with a thesis in the field of church history research. On February 26, 1907, the church appointed Dr. Peter Opladen as the first rector of the newly founded high school in Engelskirchen . In the two years of his activity, the Bergisch landscape was not without influence on his activities, especially the area between Bergisch Gladbach , Lindlar and Wipperfürth was his historical research.

February 26, 1907 first principal of the school in Engelskirchen . In 1909 he began working as a religion teacher at the secondary school in Essen-Katernberg and on March 7, 1913 at the secondary school in Krefeld. Before he was employed as a teacher at the municipal grammar school in Krefeld, he worked for a short time at the Ursuline Lycéum in Aachen. Due to the unfavorable times and his work as a historian, Opladen retired in 1937 and has lived in Kürten -Biesfeld since then , where he continued to do pastoral work and was appointed papal secret chamberlain . In 1938 a manuscript was created on the history of the Willich parish near Krefeld, in 1940 “The Minorites in Duisburg 1265 to 1832” appeared, and in 1946 a print on the history and the Bensberg parish. Contributions to the history of the diaspora of the Archdiocese of Cologne have not been printed because the manuscript was lost when the house of the Bonifatiusverein in Paderborn was destroyed.

The history of the Flittard parish, written as a manuscript in 1941, was only published in 1989. In the 1953 yearbook of the Cologne History Association appeared “The history of the former Seyen or Sion monastery in Cologne”, in 1957 Opladen described the Augustinian monastery of S. Maria Magdalena am Blaubach in Cologne, the order of the white women. In 1951 the Historical Archive in Cologne published its work on the abbey and history of Groß St. Martin and the history of the parish Groß St, Martin. Other fonts are u. a. “The Deanery Wipperfürth”, “Coming and parish Herrenstrunden in their historical development” or the home books of Leverkusen-Schlebusch .

The Heimatbuch zu Engelskirchen im Aggertal was published in 1951 with the help of Josef Külheim , with whom he had published the Heimatbuch of the Hohkeppel community in 1958. After the death of Peter Opladen, the book Engelskirchen im Aggertal was published in 1959 by Opladen and Edmund Schiefeling with the assistance of Dipl. Ing. Josef Külheim.

Further historical writings, treatises, historical essays and research on the work of Opladen, not only on Bergische history, form source material for historical, historical and church history activities.
