The Herkenrath grammar school is a state grammar school and is located in the Herkenrath district of the city of Bergisch Gladbach . It is part of the Herkenrath school center, which also includes junior high school and elementary school. The gymnasium Herkenrath is a partner school of competitive sports and offers a special part of boarding for power and squad athletes.

General information

The Herkenrath grammar school is the youngest of the grammar schools in Bergisch Gladbach . It was founded in 1974 and is now located in a building complex together with the Herkenrath secondary school. Around 1000 pupils, around half of them in the upper school (as of 2015/16), are currently attending grammar school and are taught by 87 teachers (including 9 trainee teachers; as of 2016/17).

The school is characterized by an open full day , so that for the students, except on long days, lessons end after the 6th period. In addition, afternoon care, a canteen and a wide range of AG, project courses and general homework help are offered in the afternoon. The Catholic Youth Office also provides additional, cross-school afternoon care in the “Café Cup”.

At the Gymnasium Herkenrath, in addition to the usual advanced courses such as mathematics, English, history and German, advanced courses in chemistry, physics, pedagogy and sport are offered.

School history

1790 to 1806: first beginnings

In the Herkenrath district , a bricklayer began teaching in the winter of 1790. Since there was no school building of his own at that time, he taught a few children from the surrounding area in the rooms of the Alte Küsterei at the Sankt-Antonius-Kirche , in the Scheidt house on Asselborner Weg and in a private house in the Hombach . Because at that time the teaching profession higher, richer layers was reserved, the bricklayer from the simpler rural population was probably with kind paid.

1806 to 1859: school annals

After Napoleon Bonaparte occupied the region at the beginning of the 19th century, reforms in the school sector were to follow. In the 1806 "School Improvement Plan" it was stipulated in this context that compulsory schooling was provided for girls from seven to twelve years of age and for boys up to 14 years of age. Due to political uncertainties, however, this project was only partially implemented. In 1814, the community finally made a wooden house with modest furnishings available for teaching (including Sunday classes). Since 1817 a first official teacher lived here in the attic in very simple circumstances. In 1832, probably due to the lack of space, the lessons of the meanwhile three classes were initially relocated to a barred half-timbered house (today named after it "Old School Way") before finally in 1857 - again due to a lack of space - the old school building Am Ball was built.

1859 to 1974: Establishment of the Johanniter elementary school and school reform

Only after two years of construction was it possible to officially move into the old elementary school in 1859 , from whose time the first historical evidence in the sense of "school annals" came. These were written by the retired rector at the time, and in this context the name "Johanniter Volksschule" appeared for the first time. The school had to be expanded several times in the first half of the 19th century, among other things because of the emerging mining industry and the associated population movements. The number and strength of classes rose continuously: in 1898 under the Boes school management, four to six classes followed the lessons, in 1929 five to six classes were continuously taught under the new school management Flemm. In 1959 the school consisted of seven classes, which were taught by four teachers and one teacher under the rector Walter Severin. In the course of the school reform in 1968, all elementary schools were reshaped and divided into elementary and secondary schools, so that the old school building on the Ball now became the "Johanniter Hauptschule Herkenrath".

1974: Foundation of the Herkenrath grammar school

In addition to the Johanniter Hauptschule, the Herkenrath Gymnasium was founded in the autumn of 1974, then known as the “Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium secondary level 1 i. E. in the school center Bensberg- Hercenrath ". Hans Schmidt, as the founding rector, opened the first year with 39 girls and 54 boys, which in 1983 marked the first year of high school graduation. The three-story new building, which is now shared by the secondary school and grammar school, was only available in 1978/79. Due to the decreasing number of pupils, the Johanniter secondary school has meanwhile been closed. The old school building, which is now under monument protection , is now used as a so-called "old building" by the grammar school, especially for upper-level courses, for social science lessons. In December 2014, the grammar school's 40th anniversary was celebrated in a public ceremony.

Individual support

There are individual support offers at the Herkenrath grammar school on the one hand as part of homework supervision and in the learning studio. This offer is open to pupils who have learning difficulties , especially in the subjects of German, mathematics, English, French and Latin, and who would like support from a specialist teacher. It is also possible to do homework under the supervision of a subject teacher here, Monday to Thursday until 3:45 p.m.

On the other hand, there has been a substitute hour concept since the 2016/2017 school year. Pupils can work on project-oriented tasks independently and according to their inclination in substitute hours. In addition, there are subject-specific project courses in lower secondary level, which, depending on the interests of the participating students, explore subject-specific areas in a project-like manner (for example experiments in the subject of biology ), work creatively (for example in the subject of art or German) or get involved in social activities (for example in the project “ Butterflies: Programs with street and working children ”). Each individual student should be encouraged according to their skills, interests, learning requirements and learning needs. Participation in these project courses is voluntary and ungraded. However, each student receives a project certificate prepared for him as an appreciation.

A weekly remedial course is offered in grade 5 especially to support students with reading and spelling disorders. Here the practice takes place in small groups and in small steps in order to react to individual problems of the students. A similar remedial course has been set up in the area of "grammar / sentence theory", in which linguistic phenomena that are also relevant for the foreign languages taught at the school are repeated and deepened.

Language sequence

At the Gymnasium Herkenrath, English is taught as the first foreign language in all fifth grades , which mostly corresponds to a continuation of the English skills from the primary schools in the catchment area. An additional fifth English lesson is planned in the timetable for grade 5 to provide intensive support and to harmonize the various language levels. This fifth English lesson, which is often used as a practice lesson, also serves, in particular, for individual support in the field of foreign language communication.

Starting with grade 6, the students learn either French or Latin as a second foreign language. Parents and children can get advice from specialist teachers to help them make a decision. The students are also offered several “trial lessons” in which they can gain an insight into the new foreign language in a playful way. Those who ultimately choose Latin can achieve the Latinum at the end of the introductory phase . Those who prefer to focus on lively foreign languages also have the opportunity to learn Spanish as a third foreign language from grade 8 in the differentiation area , which can also be continued in the upper level up to the Abitur.

With entry into the upper level, the school again offers the opportunity to study Spanish or French as a new foreign language. Both new foreign languages can also be taken as high school subjects.

Differentiation area from grade 8

From grade 8 onwards, different focus areas can be selected according to interests and inclination. In addition to Spanish as a third foreign language, you can choose between computer science and chemistry and biology as natural sciences, whereby the advanced courses later available for selection in the upper level should be prepared in part thematically and methodically. From the 2017/18 school year, a bilingual English / Social Studies course will be established, with a particular focus on history and social sciences. A branch in the field of art is also being considered.

In the differentiation area, particularly talented students can use the so-called "revolving door model" as individual support . These students attend two different differentiation courses on a weekly basis and learn independently the course content that they have not attended. On the one hand, the students can actively develop their skills, take responsibility for their learning process and recognize and reflect on their learning progress - without having to leave the class permanently. On the other hand, this support is a time-consuming double burden with a high proportion of independent learning. An exit from this demanding funding model is therefore possible at any time and does not result in any disadvantage for the student concerned.

Working groups

"School Inside" logo

The Gymnasium Herkenrath offers a wide range of working groups (AG). So that is several years ever canoe -M expanded in regularly on the rivers Sieg and Agger or on the Fühlinger See (beginner courses) with canoe and kayaks are made excursions. In addition, in the field of biology, in addition to the beekeeping company with its own bee state and corresponding honey production, the gardening company also established itself, in which the greening of the school grounds with as many different native plant species as possible is the focus. In this context, the school garden with its own biotope is also looked after. For the younger grades, the research group is available with playful experiments in chemistry and biology.

In the area of languages, special mention should be made of those working groups that lead to the Cambridge certificate or the DELF certificate . Depending on the interest on the part of the student body, several levels are offered here, measured against the European framework of reference . A working group that has existed since the 1980s is the school newspaper AG with the current name School Inside (formerly "Reflex"). The original print version has now been replaced by an app and an online version, on which up-to-date information on school life is presented through a wide range of media.

Other traditional AG, which are always offered across grades , are the First Aid AG, Koch AG, Mofa AG and the Chess AG. In the field of music, the big band and two choirs come in here , which provide entertainment, especially at school festivals and project weeks. In the field of sports, a Hapkido AG and a running AG are also offered to prepare for the sports LK.

Trip concept

At the school there is a travel concept with different focuses. In the lower grades, the entire grades 5 and 6 travel with parts of their class leader team to the sports and leisure village Hinsbeck , where they live in small log houses and spend the day with sports games and activities in the area of swimming and coordination. In the intermediate level, usually in grade 8, the focus is on a travel destination in Germany or in the near border area, with regional focuses being explored (geographical or historical features).

Two journeys are offered in the upper level. The first takes place as an integration trip in the first half of the high school. In addition to a sporty focus with skiing, the repertoire of methods required in high school is expanded and trained on this trip. Another important educational goal is to promote mutual cooperation and to get to know each other more intensively with the usually large grades. The destination of this integration trip is mostly Natz / Schabs in South Tyrol .

The second trip is a course trip during the qualification phase. With one of the advanced courses, a subject-specific focus is set that can be worked on appropriately at an extracurricular learning location. Cultural, historical and geographical aspects are in the foreground here. Destinations in recent years have often been Florence (history / art / architecture), Naples (history / chemistry), London (language and culture), Croatia (marine biology) and Barcelona (language / art).

One-day excursions or trips over the weekend are increasingly offered at the end of the intermediate level as well as in the upper level. As part of the USA exchange with Williston , various groups of students, consisting of American and German students, take short trips to Paris, London and Berlin every year. The French AG also offers an excursion to Paris, Spa or Liège every year . In addition, parts of the upper school always go to Canterbury for three days at the beginning of the school year , with a focus on culture and language.

Changeover to G9

For the 2019/20 school year, the Herkenrath high school will also switch to G9 again. The changeover includes grades 5 and 6 of the grammar school, including the children who were admitted to the grammar school in the 2018/2019 school year. An extension to further years does not take place because of the advanced school career. In the course of the change, the second foreign language is only chosen from year 7 onwards, whereby you can still choose between French and Latin. In the G9 course , the differentiation area will be taught from grade 9 onwards. The third possible foreign language Spanish is then specially promoted with a supplementary lesson. Overall, afternoon classes in lower secondary level will be significantly reduced.

Refectory and cafeteria

Since 2012, as part of the introduction of the G8 and the associated long days, there has been an expanded, new cafeteria in the school building. In addition, a cafeteria has been set up for the upper level , which will be operated from May 2019 by a student company managed in the project.

Support association

The development association at school - "Association of Friends, supporters and alumni desGymnasiums Herkenrath e. V. “- has existed since 1976. The association is non-profit .
