history

The name Fronhof refers to the former royal Fronhof in Herkenrath from the early medieval clearing period . In the Codex Theodorici of the Deutz Monastery , the Herkenrath Church is mentioned in 1160 as the property of Florentius von Kempenich (Eifel). In 1224 it was transferred to the property of the nobleman Dietrich von Dorndorf. The Fronhof, better known today as the Herkenrather Hof, was subject to the court court over the lower jurisdiction . For example, it was about forest, road, water and grazing rights. The original Herkenrather Hof was probably destroyed in the Thirty Years War . The half-timbered house standing there today dates from the 17th century. The defining word Fron is derived from the Old High German word “frôno” (= belonging to the Lord), or the Middle High German word “vrôn” (= rule). The Herkenrather Hof was therefore the property of a noble gentleman, i.e. a manor house that was given as a fief .

church

In the center of the village of Fronhof is the church of St. Antonius Abbas . It was first documented in 1144. It was entered under no. 17 in the list of architectural monuments in Bergisch Gladbach .
