Donato Raffaele Cardinal Sbarretti Tazza (born November 10 / November 12, 1856 in Montefranco , † April 1, 1939 in Rome ) was a diplomat of the Holy See and cardinal to the Curia .

Life

The son of a noble family studied at the Seminary of Spoleto and then at the Pontifical Seminary of St. Apollinaris, where he received his doctorate in theology and both rights . His uncle, Enea Sbarretti , was made cardinal in 1877 , two years before Sbarretti Tazza was ordained a priest at the age of 22 .

The Cardinal Vicar of Rome , Raffaele Cardinal Monaco La Valletta , ordained him priestly on April 12, 1879 in the Eternal City . After studying in Rome he was a. a. Secretary of the Congregation for Propaganda of the Faith and took on pastoral duties in Spoleto. In 1885 he became a professor of moral theology and canon law at the Pontifical Urban University . He was a member of the State Secretariat and in 1893 he got his first diplomatic post as an auditor in the Apostolic Delegation in the USA . On November 11, 1895, the Pope appointed him surplus secret chamberlain .

His next offices were in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War . Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on January 9, 1900 Bishop of San Cristóbal de la Habana . He received his episcopal ordination from the Apostolic Delegate to the United States of America, Sebastiano Martinelli OESA , on February 4 of the same year in Washington, DC ; Co- consecrators were Alfred Allen Curtis , Auxiliary Bishop in Baltimore , and John J. Monaghan , Bishop of Wilmington . As a motto he chose Respice stellam voca Mariam ("Look at the star, called Maria").

On September 16, 1901, he was raised in rank to titular Archbishop of Gortyna and appointed extraordinary Apostolic Delegate to the Philippines , then still a US colony, to negotiate the problem with the Independent Philippine Church . However, the US government wanted to solve this problem with its own negotiations with the Holy See under William Howard Taft and declared him a persona non grata , so that he could not travel to Manila . On December 16 of the same year, Sbarretti Tazza moved to the titular archbishopric of Ephesus .

On December 26, 1902, he was appointed Apostolic Delegate in Canada and in early 1910 as Apostolic Delegate in Newfoundland . He made a long trip to Europe from September 1906 to June 1907. After traveling to Rome on April 7, 1910 to present the decrees to the First Assembly of the Québec Council, he never returned to Canada. He announced his resignation on November 3, 1910, after Pope Pius X had appointed him Secretary of the Congregation for Religious on October 29, 1910 .

Pope Benedict XV took Donato Raffaele Sbarretti Tazza on December 4, 1916 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and on December 7 of the same year he received as titular church San Silvestro in Capite . On December 17, 1928, Pius XI raised him . to the rank of Cardinal Bishop of Sabina e Poggio Mirteto . He took part in the conclaves in 1922 and 1939 , the Pius XI. and Pius XII. chose.

Cardinal Sbaretti suffered a heart attack on the night of April 1, 1939, and his servant found him dead in bed that morning when he tried to wake him. The son of the landowner Agostino Donato Flavio Sbarretti and his wife Caterina Tazza was temporarily buried in the cemetery church in his hometown of Montefranco and later transferred to the local parish church according to his will.
