Michele Lega Cardinal (* 1. January 1860 in Brisighella , Papal States ; † 16th December 1935 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Michele Lega received his theological and philosophical training in Faenza and Rome. He received the most Sept. 13, 1883 sacrament of holy orders and completed his secondary studies in 1888 with the promotion to Doctor of Canon Law from. He then worked as a lecturer at various universities in Rome and held various offices in the Council Congregation of the College of Cardinals . From 1904 he was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Codification of Canon Law, in 1908 he became dean of the Rota Romana .

Pope Pius X accepted Michele Lega on May 25, 1914 as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sant'Eustachio in the college of cardinals. Pope Benedict XV appointed him Prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature in December of the same year . Michele Cardinal Lega was a member of the Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of Canon Law from 1917 . In 1920 he became prefect of the Congregation for the Sacraments . Pope Pius XI elevated him to the rank of cardinal priest pro hac vice in 1924 while retaining his titular church, and in 1926 appointed him cardinal bishop of Frascati . The donated to him on July 11, 1926 in the Sistine Chapel Pope Pius XI. personally; Co-consecrators were Carlo Cremonesi , Almsman of His Holiness , and Agostino Zampini OSA , Sacristan of His Holiness . In 1931, Michele Cardinal Lega became subdean of the College of Cardinals . His brother Antonio Lega , Archbishop of Ravenna and Bishop of Cervia, was present at the episcopal ordination. As a papal legate , Michele Lega represented the Pope at several church celebrations.

Michele Cardinal Lega died on December 16, 1935 in Rome and was buried in his birthplace.

Services

The collection of his Rota decisions from 1909 to 1914 is considered classic: Coram Lega habitae SR Rotae decisiones sive sententiae , Rome 1926. The foreword (pp. 9–64) also gives important information on the older Rota decisions and their collections, the notes added to the decisions themselves provide an interesting comparison between the older and the more recent canon law.
