Enea Sbarretti

Enea Sbarretti (born January 27, 1808 in Spoleto , Italy , † May 1, 1884 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal to the Curia .

Life

Enea Sbarretti studied civil and canon law at the La Sapienza University in Rome until 1832 . Already in 1830 he had for the Archdiocese of Spoleto , the ordination received. After graduating, he became secretary and auditor to Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti , Archbishop of Spoleto and later Pope Pius IX. He then followed this to Imola , where he became vicar general .

In 1846 Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, now Pope Pius IX, awarded him the title of Papal House Prelate . In 1851 he appointed Sbarretti auditor at the Apostolic Signature . From 1853 to 1875 he held the same office at the Roman Rota . After the annexation of the Papal States by Italy in 1870 favored Sbarretti reconciliation with the Italian Kingdom. Although he was contrary to the line of the Pope, the latter appointed him Consultor of the Holy Office in 1875 , which he remained until 1877.

In the consistory of March 12, 1877 Pius IX took him. as cardinal deacon of Santa Maria ad Martyres to the college of cardinals . After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave of 1878 , which Leo XIII. elected to succeed. Cardinal Sbarretti was appointed head of the administrative department in the Congregation De Propaganda Fide . After years of illness, he died on May 1, 1884 in the Palazzo Odescalchi, where he lived. The burial in the Campo Verano cemetery took place on May 5th of the same year under the direction of the later Cardinal Domenico Maria Jacobini .

Enea Sbarretti was the uncle of Donato Raffaele Sbarretti Tazza, who was appointed cardinal in 1916 .
